Saturday Series Discovery: Sunrise at Normandy

I have read two of Sarah Sundin's trilogies, and I loved both.  It is rich with historical facts and great characters, main characters you get to know and love, but also amazing supporting characters you are not ready to say goodbye to and want a story for them as well!

The other unique thing for me about the trilogies I have read, was that even though each book featured a different main character with their own unique story, there was overlapping of events in each book, and you get the a different POV of that event.

Apart from the fact that this series has the most gorgeous covers, this series featured a family which I love.  A family of brothers!  I just love series which features brothers.  The relationship between brothers is unique and so different to sisters and I love that the strong points and weaker points of such a relationship was featured.

I also enjoyed the redemption and prodigal son story in each book.

I recommend this book to fans of historical fiction.

If you want to find out more about each book, refer to the reviews per the links below:

Book Spotlight Fridays! Laura's Shadow

Book Beginnings and Friday56

Book Beginnings is a weekly meme hosted by Rose City Reader that asks you to share the first sentence (or so) of the book you're reading. Friday 56 is hosted by Freda's Voice and asks you to grab a book (any book), turn to page 56 or 56% in your e-reader and share a non-spoiler sentence or two.  First Line Friday is a weekly meme hosted by Reading is my Superpower that asks you to share the first sentence of the book you're reading.

I'm enjoying this Doors to the Past series which consists of various dual-time stories, not linked to each other, written by various authors.  This new book releases 1 August 2022.

Laura's Shadow

About the book:

Family Secrets Spill One Conversation at a Time

Visit historic American landmarks through the Doors to the Past series. History and today collide in stories full of mystery, intrigue, faith, and romance.

De Smet, South Dakota—1890
Young women growing up in De Smet live by two rules: don’t go out in a snowstorm and don’t give your heart to Cap Garland. Young Mariah Patterson only managed to obey one. Orphaned and having devoted her youth to scrapping out a life with her brother Charles, Mariah finds herself with no option but to marry the devoted—but dull—Merrill Gowan. Throwing caution to the wind, she seizes an opportunity to lay her feelings at Cap’s feet, even though she knows Cap sees the world through the torch he carries for Laura Ingalls. Mariah is certain her love for Cap will be strong enough to break both bonds, and she’s willing to risk everything to prove it.

De Smet, South Dakota—1974
Trixie Gowan is the fourth generation of living Gowan women residing in the sprawling farmhouse on the outskirts of De Smet. Well, former resident. She’s recently acquired her own bachelor girl apartment in Minneapolis, where she works writing ads for a neighborhood paper. She might live and work in the city, but her co-workers still call her Prairie Girl. Thus the inspiration for her comic strip—"Lost Laura"—in which a bespectacled girl in a calico dress tries to make her way in the city. The name is a quiet rebellion having grown up in a household where she’d been forbidden to mention the name, Laura. But when her great-grandmother Mariah’s declining health brings Trixie home for a visit, two things might just keep her there: the bedside manner of Dr. Campbell Carter and the family secret that seems to be spilling from GG’s lips one conversation at a time.

Book Beginnings

The schoolhouse was nothing more than a shack, with sunlight and drifting snow blowing through the spaces between the thin, rough-cut slats.

Friday 56

"I'm not going to get murdered," Trixie would say, fully convinced that her mother dreaded the unflattering photograph more than the hypothetical scenario.

My thoughts so far

This is a slower story, but I am enjoying discovering Mariah's life story.

Series Review: Sandhill Dreams and Captive Dreams

Sandhill Dreams by Cara C. Putman
My rating: ðŸ’›ðŸ’›ðŸ’›

Rating 3.5

I enjoyed this story about fighting the war from the home front. There was a lot of importance about serving in the war and fighting the enemy overseas, but so much support and work was required at home to make the fight stronger.

I enjoyed the characters and how their relationship developed. It was sad to see how pet dogs was trained as military work dogs. I loved how the dogs did get honors discharge though and was treated just as important as their fellow human soldiers.

Captive Dreams

Captive Dreams by Cara C. Putman
My rating: 💛💛💛

I enjoyed this audiobook - the narrator was entertaining with Anna, though Sid came across a bit robotic.

The theme about letting go of what you can’t control, giving those concerns over to God and trust in Him was strong.

The romance was sweet and developed slowly over time.

About the books:

Sandhill Dreams

Lainie has no dreams left. Lainie Gardner dreamed of becoming a nurse. Of serving her country. Of doing something important in the war. But rheumatic fever changed all that, and instead of running home, Lainie is determined to find a job at Fort Robinson in Nebraska's sandhills. Tom Hamilton had dreams, too. Dreams of preparing the horses at Fort Robinson for duty on the warfront. Instead, he is assigned to train war dogs and their handlers, meaning that each day he must face the fear he's had of dogs since he was bitten as a child. Lainie and Tom wonder why God seems to have denied them their dreams. But is it possible new dreams will bring them more joy than they ever imagined?

Captive Dreams

A heartwarming WWII historical from award-winning author Cara Putman:

Anna Goodman’s mother is dead, her father has given up on life, and her brother is missing in action in World War II. Anna’s dreams for the future are held captive by the responsibilities the war and life have thrust upon her. She’s desperate to hold the farm together while working at a war factory in nearby Kearney. She can’t do it alone. She must interact daily with Specialist Sid Chance, the cocky know-it-all who oversees the German prisoners who work on her family farm—prisoners that are a constant reminder of her father’s harrowing experience in World War I.

As Sid gets to know the determined Anna, he must balance her mistrust against his desire to help farmers. With so many able-bodied men deployed around the world, the prisoners’ labor is essential to save local farms from ruin. He must also battle against prejudice from men like Anna’s father, who can’t stand their presence or the memories they force him to relive. Sid wants to protect Anna, if she’d only let him. Anna’s as skittish as a colt, but he’s determined to win her heart.

When the farm’s future is at risk, Anna must decide whether she can trust Sid with her heart…and her future.

Review: Shadow of the Storm

Shadow of the Storm Shadow of the Storm by Connilyn Cossette
My rating: 💛💛💛

This book made me think about how the Israelites experienced their exodus and stay in the desert after years of slavery in Egypt. That is one reason I enjoy Biblical fiction - though fictional, the author helps me bring colour to a well known story.

I enjoyed the different characters’ POV and the growth Shira went through, overcoming her past and experiencing God’s forgiveness and redemption.

About the book:

In the Depth of the Storm's Shadow, Only Truth Can Light Her Way

Having escaped Egypt with the other Hebrews during the Exodus, Shira is now living in freedom at the foot of Mt. Sinai, upon which rests the fiery glowing Cloud containing the shekinah glory of God. When the people disobey Yahweh and build a golden idol, the ensuing chaos gives Shira an unexpected opportunity to learn the arts of midwifery. Although her mother wishes for her to continue in the family weaving trade, Shira's gifts shine brightest when she assists with deliveries. In defiance of her mother, Shira pursues her heart's calling to become an apprentice midwife.

When a delivery goes horribly wrong, Shira finds herself bound to a man who betrayed her, the caretaker of three young children, and the target of a vengeful woman whose husband was killed by Shira's people, the Levites. As contention between the Hebrew tribes and the foreigners fans the flames of another dangerous rebellion, Shira will come face-to-face with the heartbreak of her past that she has kept hidden for so long. How can she let go of all that has defined her to accept the love she's denied herself and embrace who she truly is?

Can't Wait Wednesday! Worthy of Legend

Can't Wait Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Wishful Endings that spotlights and discusses the books we're excited about that we've yet to read. Generally, they're books that are yet to be released. It's based on Waiting on Wednesday, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine.

Loving this series and looking forward to the third and final story in the series, releasing September 2022.

About the book: Worthy of Legend

After a summer of successful pirate-treasure hunting, Lady Emily Scofield and her friends must hide the unprecedented discoveries they've made, thanks to the betrayal of her own family. Horrified by her brother, who stops at nothing to prove himself to their greedy father, Emily is forced to take a stand against her family--even when it means being cut off entirely.

Bram Sinclair, Earl of Telford, is fascinated with tales of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table--an interest he's kept mostly hidden for the last decade. But when a diary is unearthed on the islands that could lead to a secret artifact, Bram is the only one able to piece the legends together.

As Bram and Emily seek out the whereabouts of the hidden artifact, they must dodge her family and a team of archeologists. In a race against time, it is up to them to decide what makes a hero worthy of legend. Is it fighting valiantly to claim the treasure . . . or sacrificing everything in the name of selfless love?

Weekend Wrap-up: July 25th

It’s Monday! What are you reading? is hosted by Book Date.

I am a bit late in posting this.  We took a long weekend and spend some internet free time in Cederberg.  It is so beautiful there and we always feel refreshed after, though still tired, because we have a 5 year old and 2 year old.  This year we could be more active, taking the boys on shorter hikes.

Review: Tell Her No Lies

Tell Her No Lies Tell Her No Lies by Kelly Irvin
My rating: 💛💛💛

This romantic suspense kept my interest and there were a few twists and turns which kept me guessing. The Lies that came to light was intriguing and kept me wondering what will happen next.

The love triangle was good, but with readers seeing a bit more about one character, it is easy to know what we hope will happen.

This suspense showed what can happen when people are desperate and feel like they have no other options.

It was my first suspense by this author, and I liked it enough to want to read her other suspense as well.

About the book:

“A moving and compelling tale about the power of grace and forgiveness that reminds us how we become strongest in our most broken moments.”—Library Journal review of Upon a Spring Breeze

Even the most admired families have secrets to hide . . .

Nina Fischer carries a camera wherever she goes—so she can view life through a filter. Safely. After her mother abandoned her to the streets, Nina has kept people at a distance, including her uncle, who adopted Nina and her sister. Wealthy and proud, he is a good man, a fair judge, and someone many in San Antonio admire.

But when he is murdered, and the detective assigned to the case accuses Nina of the crime, she knows she must act. She’s determined to use her journalism background to find the real killer. The two men in her life want to help, but can she trust them?  She’s known Rick since they were children, but now he’s an attorney whose political aspirations seem more important than Nina’s tragic loss. And then there’s Aaron, a news videographer; using their friendship could break the biggest story of his career.

Following the evidence leads Nina on a journey of discovery into her father’s shocking masquerade as a law-abiding, family-loving Christian. Unlocking these secrets could prove fatal, but it’s the only way Nina will ever be able to trust love again.

Combining romance and suspense, bestselling author Kelly Irvin’s Tell Her No Lies is a high-stakes race for the truth.

Review: Raising Emotionally Strong Boys: Tools Your Son Can Build on for Life

Raising Emotionally Strong Boys: Tools Your Son Can Build on for Life Raising Emotionally Strong Boys: Tools Your Son Can Build on for Life by David Thomas
My rating: 💛💛💛💛

As a mom of two boys, the title immediately grabbed my attention. I read this slowly, in to take it all in. I loved that this book is basically a resource to guide parents to identify the best in their boys, and grow their strong points in even better strengths.

There was so much to learn and I will go back to this book as my boys grow and find themselves in different seasons.

As a runner myself, my favourite part was when the author described the team who helped the athlete break the 2hr record on a marathon. I watched this run and was amazed. But why was it my favourite part of the book - because in life, we need a team around us and our children, to help them reach goals and keep them on track - and we as parents have an important rule choosing that team in our children’s lives.

Review: The Extraordinary Deaths of Mrs. Kip

The Extraordinary Deaths of Mrs. Kip The Extraordinary Deaths of Mrs. Kip by Sara Brunsvold
My rating: 💛💛💛💛

When I see a new book by a debut author, it really is a 50/50 on whether I want to read it or not. I think I have read the summary various times until I finally decided to give this debut a try. And I am glad I did.

“A leaf has the most extraordinary death. There is so much beauty to it.”

Mrs. Kip was such a lively and vibrant character and a great example of how to serve and love others unconditionally and with every opportunity. This book was also a reminder of the wisdom the elderly has from their life experience, and if we just spend time to sit and listen, we have so much to learn from them.

But hard things usually end in the biggest blessings.

Aidyn was like so many young ones today - driven and want that importance now, without really going through the learning steps to get to that next level. The lessons she had to learn was important and ones each of us can also take to heart and her character growth developed well through the story.

The book did slow down a bit after 50% but I still enjoyed the story.

I recommend this story to fans of contemporary stories, and if you have a history of needing tissues with emotional reads, keep your box with you.

*I received a complimentary copy from the publisher. All opinions expressed are my own.*

View all my reviews

About the book:

Aidyn Kelley is talented, ambitious, and ready for a more serious assignment than the fluff pieces she’s been getting as a cub reporter for the Kansas City Star. In her eagerness, she pushes too hard, earning herself the menial task of writing an obituary for an unremarkable woman who’s just entered hospice care. But there’s more to Clara Kip than meets the eye. The spirited septuagenarian may be dying, but she’s not quite ready to cash it in yet. Never one to shy away from an assignment herself, she can see that God brought the young reporter into her life for a reason. And if it’s a story Aidyn Kelley wants, that’s just what Mrs. Kip will give her—but she’s going to have to work for it.

About the author:

Sara Brunsvold creates stories that speak hope, truth, and life. Influenced by humble women of God who

find His fingerprints in the everyday, she does the same in her life and her storytelling. Sara’s recognitions include the 2020 ACFW Genesis Award for Contemporary Fiction. She lives with her family in Kansas City, where she can often be spotted writing at a park or library.
