Review: The Sky Above Us

The Sky Above Us The Sky Above Us by Sarah Sundin
My rating: 💛💛💛💛

This is the second series I'm reading written by Sarah Sundin, and I enjoy the way she writes the series about the same subject, with this series, the events building up to D-day in WW2), but how each book brings the main character's POV to that event.

I would suggest reading this series in order, to avoid some spoilers, but also to get the full picture and build up to the characters in the way I think the author intended.

So, we met Adler in the life changing opening scene in book 1, and from Wyatt's story, the reader has an idea of what happened to Adler, but how wrong we are to think we know everything! A few twists and surprised (or not so surprising) revelations kept this reader engaged.

Oh Adler. He is that rough, bad boy type of character, but you just know so much more to give. And I was not wrong. His character growth and road to redemption was one of loss, wrong choices, and heartbreak. I loved how he learned to be the best pilot in every season.

I could symphonize with Violet, since I've seen a lot of my own growth in her journey - learning not to judge on her ideas of what the mission field is and to learn to listen to God's will for her life and not what others think God's will is for her life.

The action and suspense peaked at the right moments, with some obvious villains to dislike and not so obvious which caught me by surprise.

Forgiveness without reconciliation would be like barbecue without the sauce—nourishing, but not the full savory delight.

My favourite secondary character was hands down, Nick. He played a vital role in both Adler and Violet's journey and a classic example of dynamite comes in small packages! I was scared throughout the book that something will happen to him - you will have to read to see if I was right or not.

So much more to say about this book and series, but for now will just end with saying that I can't wait to read Clay's story. Because after seeing Wyatt and Adler's POV of the day which cause a break in the brothers' relationship, I'm expecting a heart-breaking story about forgiveness and reconciliation in the final book of the series!

About the book:

Numbed by grief and harboring shameful secrets, Lt. Adler Paxton ships to England with the US 357th Fighter Group in 1943. Determined to become an ace pilot, Adler battles the German Luftwaffe in treacherous dogfights in the skies over France as the Allies struggle for control of the air before the D-day invasion.

Violet Lindstrom wanted to be a missionary, but for now she serves in the American Red Cross, where she arranges entertainment for the men of the 357th in the Aeroclub on base and sets up programs for local children. Drawn to the mysterious Adler, she enlists his help with her work and urges him to reconnect with his family after a long estrangement.

Despite himself, Adler finds his defenses crumbling when it comes to Violet. But D-day draws near. And secrets can't stay buried forever.

Bestselling author Sarah Sundin returns readers to the shores of Normandy, this time in the air, as the second Paxton brother prepares to face the past--and the most fearsome battle of his life.
