Book Spotlight Fridays! The Lady's Mine

Book Beginnings and Friday56

Book Beginnings is a weekly meme hosted by Rose City Reader that asks you to share the first sentence (or so) of the book you're reading. Friday 56 is hosted by Freda's Voice and asks you to grab a book (any book), turn to page 56 or 56% in your e-reader and share a non-spoiler sentence or two.

I love Francine Rivers' books.  The only downside is that we have to wait so long between books 😊.

The Lady's Mine

About the book:

New York Times bestselling author Francine Rivers returns to the California frontier in this sweeping, romantic tale of a displaced New England suffragette, a former Union soldier disinherited by his Southern family, and the town they join forces to save.

1875. When Kathryn Walsh arrives in tiny Calvada, a mining town nestled in the Sierra Nevadas, falling in love is the farthest thing from her mind. Banished from Boston by her wealthy stepfather, she has come to claim an inheritance from the uncle she never knew: a defunct newspaper office on a main street overflowing with brothels and saloons, and a seemingly worthless mine. Moved by the oppression of the local miners and their families, Kathryn decides to relaunch her uncle's newspaper--and then finds herself in the middle of a maelstrom, pitted against Calvada's most powerful men. But Kathryn intends to continue to say--and publish--whatever she pleases, especially when she knows she's right.

Matthias Beck, owner of a local saloon and hotel, has a special interest in the new lady in town. He instantly recognizes C. T. Walsh's same tenacity in the beautiful and outspoken redhead--and knows all too well how dangerous that family trait can be. While Kathryn may be right about Calvada's problems, her righteousness could also get her killed. But when the handsome hotelier keeps finding himself on the same side of the issues as the opinionated Miss Walsh, Matthias's restless search for purpose becomes all about answering the call of his heart.

Everyone may be looking to strike it rich in this lawless boomtown, but it's a love more precious than gold that will ultimately save them all.

Book Beginnings

Bleary-eyed and aching, Kathryn braced herself again as the stagecoach rattled over a stretch of rough road.

Friday 56

Matthias came closer.  She stood her ground, but he saw a faint flush in her cheeks.

My thoughts so far

Enjoying this one.  Unfortunately untimely load shedding is delaying my night reading.

Review: Guilty Blood

Guilty Blood Guilty Blood by Rick Acker
My rating: 💛💛💛💛

This book will make for an excellent movie.

I loved all the danger, mystery and intrigue the journey of defending Brandon and trying to find the truth took me on.

The conspiracy theory was captivating, yet felt far fetched and you wanted to believe it but also wondering if you should, especially when the prison brought out sides of Brandon which you didn’t expect.

I loved Kevin - he was such an complex character and I feel like the author did a great job of pinning him down.

With twists and turns at just the right times, I could never really relax.

The audiobook was really done well and I was invested from beginning to end.

*I listened to the audiobook on Scribd.*

About the book:

Jessica Ames is desperate. Her college-age son, Brandon, has been arrested for murder, and the evidence is stacked against him. His DNA matches the blood and skin found under the victim’s fingernails, and the murder weapon was recovered near his apartment. Jessica turns to the only lawyer she knows for help.

Nate Daniels is no criminal defense attorney; he’s a highly successful corporate litigator. He also has unresolved feelings for Jessica. As her late husband’s best friend, Nate takes the case pro bono, knowing he has no choice but to do everything within his power to get Brandon acquitted.

As Nate and Jessica work with the public defender to save her son, the loyalty, faith, and love between them grows into something more—even as their investigation is bringing out some very powerful and dangerous enemies…

About the author:

Rick Acker writes novels during his commute to and from his "real job" as a Supervising Deputy Attorney

General in the California Department of Justice. His unit prosecutes corporate fraud lawsuits of the type described in the #1 bestseller, WHEN THE DEVIL WHISTLES, which award-winning author Colleen Coble describes as "a legal thriller you won't want to miss!"

Rick has led investigations and lawsuits that made headlines in and out of California. Most recently, he and his team won a string record-breaking judgments and settlements against the Wall Street players who created the toxic mortgage securities that triggered the Great Recession. Before joining DOJ, Rick was a senior litigator at Bingham McCutchen, where he worked on high stakes litigation, including a fight between two owners of the San Francisco Forty-Niners and a multibilllion dollar international fraud case. Rick has law degrees from the University of Oslo and the University of Notre Dame, where he graduated with honors. In addition to his novels, he is a contributing author on two legal treatises published by the American Bar Association.

When Rick isn't writing or lawyering, you can usually find him with his wife, Anette, and their four children. They'll be exploring in the hills east of San Francisco, watching a good movie together, or, of course, reading. You can visit him on the web at www.rickacker.com

Review: Willow

Willow Willow by Ronie Kendig
My rating: 💛💛💛💛💛

As stunning as this cover is, so powerful is the story contained within.

the Lord will fight for you; you only need to be still.

Ronie Kendig took on the challenge of focusing on a very difficult subject, human trafficking, and delivered a story filled with evil, hurt and darkness, but also that feeling of hope and that Light will break through. Ronie Kendig did not sugar coat the horrible truth about human trafficking and the evil being done to the victims, but the author handled this subject with tact. Sensitive readers will find this book difficult to read.

What I love about this author's work, and which I found again in this story, is that among all the harsh realities, the author will give the reader a relief through the amazing fun banter of amazing characters. I found myself smiling and laughing a few times while reading some of the great banter between the Metcalfes and Range and Cord.

Readers who read the Tox files and loved Tox's "guardian angel" in that series, will love that the stick fighting African warrior has his own story in this book. Chiji's solidness, in faith and skills, was what made me love him in the Tox files and made him an amazing hero in his own story. Willow's strength even amidst the danger and her questions made her one strong female lead.

I loved that a few characters from all Ronie Kendig's previous serious popped up and the author provided a list at the end to tie back the characters to those series.

Range! Bring on his story! I loved this series, not taking nonsense, Metcalfe brother and would love to see how he ended up on the path we saw him on in Willow.

So yes, Willow was a difficult book to read, but one deserving to be read.

*I received a complimentary copy from the author. All opinions expressed are my own.*

About the book:

To save her, he must become the evil he fights.

Aftercare specialist Willow Metcalfe joined Mission: Liberate Everyone to help trafficking survivors navigate the healing process. When MiLE’s Obioma Compound is attacked by the Nigerian mafia, she’s taken hostage. Against nightmarish odds, she and the victims attempt an escape—and are thwarted.

A decade after leaving his beloved homeland, Chijioke “Chiji” Okorie returns to find his sister and fight for his own country. Believing a global trafficking ring behind her abduction and a string of kidnappings across Nigeria, he goes undercover to find the head of the serpent and his sister. Chiji is stunned to discover among the hostages a familiar face—a friend’s sister, Willow. The woman he vowed years ago to marry.

The man who has interfered with her escape attempts seems … familiar, kind—but Willow knows better. He reeks of the warrior ethos that has devoured many a good man. Engaged in an impossible battle and losing at every turn, Chiji is determined to complete his missions—all of them. Even if it kills him.

This was not an easy read but one worth reading.  I always love how this author breaks up the darkness with some lighthearted banter between the characters.

Review: The Catch

The Catch The Catch by Lisa Harris
My rating: 💛💛💛💛

Fans of Lisa Harris and Suspense will not be disappointed with this final book in the series.

This series needs to be read in order, since this last book concludes a mystery and romance thread which starts in book one, and spoilers will be evident.

The action was never ending, fast paced and I was on my edge of my seat for most of this story.
The mystery about Ava which started and ended in book three, was also interesting and a few plot twists not expected. I enjoyed how the author caught the reader up through changing to Ava's POV.

“I was also reminded that God is like our rope and harness. He didn’t give us a spirit of fear. He calls us to trust him. And I’m not just talking about when climbing.”

I loved that this series focused only on Maddison and Jonas from book one through to book three. Sometimes you meet characters who needs more than one book and Maddison and Jonas' story would have felt rushed if it was settled with only one book. Though, I did love Tucker which we met in book three and would have loved a story for him.

*I received a complimentary copy from the publisher. All opinions expressed are my own.*

About the book:

After a harrowing attempt on a judge's life at the courthouse, Deputy US Marshals Madison James and Jonas Quinn are tasked with finding a missing woman and an endangered child in connection to the murder of the judge's wife. What seems like a fairly straightforward case becomes hopelessly tangled when the marshals discover that the woman they are searching for is in witness protection and the Amber Alert put out for the missing child has put two lives in danger.

Madison and Jonas are forced into a race to find the woman and the child before the men who want her dead discover her location. And in a final showdown that could cost her everything, Madison will come face-to-face with the person who murdered her husband.

USA Today bestselling author Lisa Harris concludes her thrilling US Marshals series with this breathless tale of secrets kept, lies exposed, and ultimately, justice prevailing.

About the author:

LISA HARRIS is a Christy Award finalist for Blood Ransom and Vendetta, Christy Award winner for Dangerous Passage, and the winner of the Best Inspirational Suspense Novel for 2011 (Blood Covenant) and 2015 (Vendetta) from Romantic Times.

Review: Yours Is the Night

Yours Is the Night Yours Is the Night by Amanda Dykes
My rating: 💛💛💛

Amanda Dykes really has a beautiful way of telling a story and to draw a reader in. This story set in WW1 was no exception. Fans of Amanda Dykes' previous works will love this one as well.

I think I might just not have been in the mood for such a "heavier" read. I listened to the audiobook and the narrator gave each POV (5) an unique voice, but I did find myself a bit confused with which one I'm at now and then.

This book has a high rating on Goodreads and if you enjoyed this author's previous works, you will most likely love this one as well.

And the cover is stunning!

About the book:

A mysterious song in the forest. . .
A discovery in war-torn France. . .
A journey toward hope.

Private Matthew Petticrew arrives in France as part of the American Expeditionary Forces, an arrival which a war-weary France desperately hopes will help to end the turmoil. Having faced unthinkable things on the front, he is captivated by the sound of a lullaby, sung by a voice so pure he knows he must have imagined it. But rumors sweep through the trenches like wildfire, dubbing the voice "The Angel of Argonne", a mysterious presence who leaves behind wreaths on unmarked graves and footprints in the war-pocked soil.

Raised wild in the depths of the Forest of Argonne, France, Mireilles finds her world rocked when war comes crashing into the idyllic home she has always known, taking much from her. When Matthew discovers Mireilles, three things are clear: She is alone in the world, she cannot stay, and he and his two unlikely companions might be the only ones who can get her to safety.

About the author:

I'm Amanda. Just a girl redeemed, whose God has spun words into my heart. This is where I share them. My hope is for this place to reflect His refuge, a safe place of encouragement for you. Brew a cup of tea, pull up a chair, and sit a while; I'm so glad you're here!

Review: Fairchild's Lady

Fairchild's Lady Fairchild's Lady by Roseanna M. White
My rating: 💛💛💛

Though this was a short novella, the story did not feel short or rushed. I enjoyed the mystery meeting between Fairchild and Julienne and how events pulled their paths together.

There was danger, intrigue, suspense, and a villain you disliked from the start.

I enjoyed catching up with Fairchild and seeing his own happy ending.

Can't Wait Wednesday! Potiphar's Wife

Can't Wait Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Wishful Endings that spotlights and discusses the books we're excited about that we've yet to read. Generally, they're books that are yet to be released. It's based on Waiting on Wednesday, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine.

I loved all of Mesu Andrew's Biblical fiction and looking forward to her new release in May!

About the book: Potiphar's Wife

The drama of the Old Testament comes to life as one of the Bible's most infamous women longs for Joseph, her husband's servant, in this riveting novel from the award-winning author of Isaiah's Legacy.

Before she is Potiphar's wife, Zuleika is a king's daughter on the isle of Crete, where the sisterhood of women rules in the absence of their seafaring husbands. Now that she's come of age, Zuleika knows she will soon be betrothed. Her father believes his robust trade with Egypt will ensure Pharaoh's obligation to marry his daughter.

But Pharaoh refuses and gives her instead to Potiphar, the captain of his bodyguards--a crusty bachelor twice her age, who would rather have a new horse than a Minoan wife.

Abandoned by her father, rejected by Pharaoh, and humiliated by Potiphar's indifference, Zuleika yearns for affection. But when her obsession with Joseph, the Hebrew chamberlain with the face and body of the gods, goes terribly wrong, she discovers the truth: Only the God of Joseph can heal her wounded heart.

Well, this is an easy topic 😁.

1.  Christy Barritt

I have so many books on my TBR by this author, I need to get to them sometime!

This author's suspense grabbed my eye and on my list to try.

I saw her books in my friends' Goodreads feeds and it always looks interesting.

I heard great things about this author's legal thrillers and planning to read one of his books this year.

Another author whose legal thrillers I want to try.

A fairly new author (from 2019), but I have seen a few good reviews.  I have two of her books in my TBR.

This author grabbed my attention through her beautiful covers.

This author is on my radar for a few years now.  I can't believe I still need to read her books.

Another suspense author I thought I would have read by now since adding her books to my TBR years ago.

I have read a novella by this author, but all of her romantic suspense books are on my TBR list.
