Review: The Rook

The Rook The Rook by Steven James
My rating: πŸ’›πŸ’›πŸ’›πŸ’›

I'm loving Patrick Bowers and all his complex relationships, mostly his growing relationship with his step-daughter, Tessa. Some of their scenes left me smiling and with a warm feeling. Tessa is such a complex person, having to endure so much in her young life, and to see the interaction between her and Pat is so heartwarming - especially how things unique to their relationship makes her feel safe.

I've listened to the audiobook and I loved the narrator. He nails Pat's voice and even Tessa's I-don't-care-attitude.

Looking forward to the next book in this series.

Review: Never Say Goodbye

Never Say Goodbye Never Say Goodbye by Susan May Warren
My rating: πŸ’›πŸ’›πŸ’›

I rarely give this author less than 4-stars, her writing is just that good. This 3-star also has nothing to do with the writing and suspense plot - there was danger, action, a handsome brooding hero. For me, the lower rating had all to do with the leading lady, Sarai. She just came across as naΓ―ve and not making smart choices, for a doctor and one who has spend years in Russia. Also, her outlook on life and God's calling on people's life seemed a bit immature.

I'm looking forward to the final book in this series as the suspense and intrigue was still as expected by one of my favourite authors.

*I've read this on Kindle Unlimited.*

But if he doesn't find her before the authorities do, she'll be arrested...and he'll be branded an enemy of the state.

But American medical missionary Dr. Sarai Curtiss is not about to leave--not with an epidemic on her hands that is taking the lives of Russia's children. Faced with a corrupt government, the military elite tasked with tracking them down, and an out-of-control medical crisis, it will be a race against time--and wills--to save lives, including their own. And the biggest casualty of all just might be their hearts.

Book Spotlight Fridays! Set in Stone and Love and a little white lie

Book Beginnings and Friday56

Book Beginnings is a weekly meme hosted by Rose City Reader that asks you to share the first sentence (or so) of the book you're reading. Friday 56 is hosted by Freda's Voice and asks you to grab a book (any book), turn to page 56 or 56% in your e-reader and share a non-spoiler sentence or two.

This is probably my top 1 series for 2021 - I loved the 4th book who will be released August 10.  Also scroll down for a lighter read option...

Set in Stone

About the book:

Rembrandt Stone is on the case of a serial killer. But when the killer finds him first, he puts the one person Rembrandt loves in his cross hairs. Now, Rembrandt must outwit time to save the people he loves.

The continuing adventures of Rembrandt Stone from the creative minds of James L. Rubart, Susan May Warren and newcomer David Curtis Warren, writing as DAVID JAMES WARREN.

Book Beginnings

What is happiness?  Is it a place? A time? A choice?

Friday 56

Don't beat yourself up, Inspector.  Just...find this guy.  Stop him.  And pray you don't need that watch ever again.

My thoughts so far

I am so invested in Rem's story, this series is so good and once the whole series is published, I might just listen to it back to back on audio.   Two months don't seem so long to wait for the next book, but it feels like forever!

*************************************************************

Love and a little white lie

About the book:

January Sanders grew up believing karma was more reliable than an imaginary higher power, but after suffering her worst heartbreak in 29 years, she's open to just about anything, including taking a temporary position at her aunt's church. Keeping her lack of faith a secret, January is determined to use her photographic memory to help Grace Community's overworked staff, all while scraping herself off rock bottom.

What she doesn't count on is meeting the church's handsome and charming guitarist, who not only is a strong believer, but has also dedicated his life to Christian music. It's a match set for disaster, and yet January has no ability to stay away, even if it means pretending to have faith in a God she doesn't believe in.

Only this time, keeping secrets isn't as easy as she thought it would be. Especially when she's constantly running into her aunt's landscape architect, who seems to know everything about her past and present sins and makes no apologies about pushing her to deal with feelings she'd rather keep buried.

Torn between two worlds incapable of coexisting, can January find the healing that's eluded her or will her resistance to the truth ruin any chance of happiness?

Book Beginnings

I've face-planted myself into rock bottom.

Friday 56

I snort.  That word faith always seems to be their answer for everything they can't explain.

My thoughts so far

I'm only 35% and this is a new-to-me author, but enjoying this lighter read.

Can't Wait Wednesday: A Midnight Dance

Can't Wait Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Wishful Endings that spotlights and discusses the books we're excited about that we've yet to read. Generally, they're books that are yet to be released. It's based on Waiting on Wednesday, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine.

I only found this author a few years ago, but I'm enjoying her writing and all her stories.  Looking forward to her new book coming September.

About the book: A Midnight Dance

All theater romances are tragedies. Ella Blythe knows this. Still, she cannot help but hope her own story may

turn out different than most--and certainly different than the tragic story of the Ghost of Craven Street Theater. Yet as she struggles to maintain her tenuous place in the ever-shrinking ballet company, win the attentions of principal dancer Philippe, and avoid company flirt Jack, Ella cannot deny the uncanny feeling that her life is mirroring that of the dead ballerina.

Is she dancing ever closer to the edge of her own tragic end? Or will the secrets that are about to come to light offer release from the past?

Mystery and romance make the perfect dance partners in this evocative story from fan-favorite Joanna Davidson Politano.

Books I’d Want With Me While Stranded On a Deserted Island

Join in the Top Ten Tuesday fun! Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.

This question almost feels the same as "What would you do with $1m"...  So, if I'm stranded on an island, what would I want and specifically need?  Also, may I cheat and say My kindle.πŸ“š..I should get at least 2-3 weeks of reading on that if the battery is fully charged πŸ˜€

1.  The Bible

So if I want to survive a deserted Island, I need to remain mentally stable:

I will definitely need an aid to be able to survive physically:

Mainly because this is something I don't really want to read but my husband wants to and it is long, so I figured as I am reading it I can use the pages for fire?

I just love this story and will soon be rereading it.  I won't mind having this novel with me to reread all the time.

I've recently read this in July and would love to reread it again.

I would like to cheat and say this whole series, but if I can't I would like to take the first book along since it will help me not feel alone wrt suddenly being in a situation with no modern day conveniences.

Because I would need distraction and a few laughs.

8.  Wyatt

I will need my Susan May Warren fix if I want to survive.

This was a beautiful story of redemption which I would love to read again.

I have fond memories of reading this one.

Book Spotlight Fridays! The Impossible Kid and Never Say Goodbye

This week I'm highlighting the non-fiction I'm reading and a Romantic Suspense from one of my favourite authors:

The Impossible Kid: Parenting a Strong-Willed Child with Love and Grace

About the book:

When a mother’s journey begins, one is venturing into the unknown.

It’s hard to imagine what this tiny little baby will be as an adult. My journey was difficult, heart-wrenching, and laborious and yet joyful, worth every tear and strife. My child seemed impossible to me, but God chose me to be the mother of this impossible child. And what we deem impossible, God makes possible (Luke 18:27).

From the introduction
In The Impossible Kid, relationship coach and pastor’s wife Lucille Williams writes an exceptionally honest and funny account of parenting a strong-willed child. Through 11 entertaining chapters, this book provides practical tools for parents to sow seeds of encouragement in their kids as they aspire to raise adults who reflect the nature and character of God. Endorsed by Dr. Gary Smalley, The Impossible Kid is an encouraging and informative read, covering topics including family dysfunctions, feeling like an inadequate parent, creative and effective discipline, parenting with integrity, the dreaded sex talk, learning to laugh together, and keeping God as the focal point in the home.

*************************************************************

Book Beginnings

What's important?  What really matters to you?

Friday 56

Looking at God as the perfect parent, there is much we can learn.  We need to listen and understand what is going on with our kids and not jump to conclusions.  Seek to comprehend what is happening in their world and look at their heart.

My thoughts so far

This is the second book I'm reading by this author.  I enjoy her openness and honesty and can relate a lot.  This book will be published September 1st.

Review: Make You Feel My Love

Make You Feel My Love Make You Feel My Love by Robin Lee Hatcher
My rating: πŸ’›πŸ’›πŸ’›πŸ’›

This was a very easy-to-read story which flowed smoothly and fast, but at the same time there was depth which we got through the characters’ journey to freedom - in both past and present timelines. Freedom from expectations, set paths, danger and to learn to Trust God completely.

I enjoyed both story lines, loved seeing both couples grow in their relationship but loved Peter and Cora’s steady, grounded love a bit more. I would have liked to spend a bit more time in their timeline and be more part of their story instead of only being given glimpses.

They way Chelsea grew stronger and overcame her fears as she grew in her newfound relationship with God felt realistic. Liam was just a great leading man and I loved seeing his personal thoughts and feelings through his journal entries.

I’m not sure if this will be a series, I hope there will be a sequel, since I want a bit more story around the pearls…and I’m not feeling ready to say goodbye to these characters.

*I received a complimentary copy via Netgalley. All opinions expressed are my own.*

Review: Chasing Fireflies

Chasing Fireflies Chasing Fireflies by Charles Martin
My rating: πŸ’›πŸ’›πŸ’›

Love does that. It names the nameless and gives voice to the voiceless.

This was my second book by Charles Martin and the beauty and depth of his stories and characters again confirmed why I would like to read more by this author. The mysteries was intriguing and the way the author dropped hints and brought everything to a close was well written.

I listened to this on audio. Though the narrator wasn't the best at the start, the story drew me in and I enjoyed it by the end.

About the book:

“Never settle for less than the truth,” she told him. But when you don’t even know your real name, the truth gets a little complicated. It can nestle so close to home it’s hard to see. It can even flourish inside a lie. And as Chase Walker discovered, learning the truth about who you are can be as elusive—and as magical—as chasing fireflies on a summer night. A haunting audio about fishing, baseball, home cooking, and other matters of life and death.

Books I Read In One Sitting (or would have if I had the time)

Join in the Top Ten Tuesday fun! Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.

Oh, this week's topic is easy...I have so many options this week.  I will try and limit it to books I've given 5 stars and would love to read again.

1.  If I run

Actually, this whole series.  You should read it, and you should have all 3 books because each book end with cliffhangers and follow on each other:

2.  The Negotiater

I think I've read this series of 6 books in 3-4 days.

This third book in the series was the best yet, but I'm looking forward to what is still to come in the rest of the series.

4.  Wyatt

Actually this whole series - once I've started, I wanted to see what happens.  This is also one of those series best to read in order.

This series!  Fast paced, action packed and twists and turns everywhere!

This book was full of emotions, heartbreak and breath-holding moments.

This was one of the best WW2 stories I've read - and one I wished had a different ending.

Another series I've binged on and I think I've read this over a weekend.

Another great WW2 book I struggled to put down!

10.  Submerged

This book led me to another favourite author find and I binged on this series!
