Author Discovery: Patricia Bradley

 I remember when I first saw Patricia Bradley's name doing the rounds on my Goodreads friends' feed, and thought, ok, another romantic suspense author to try.  So, I took a chance and the result...another author on my to-read-list.

I'm glad that I discovered Patricia Bradley in the middle of her career.  I have one book to read to be caught up on everything she published to date.

Why do I enjoy her stories:

💜  Her stories are captivating and has me on the edge of my seat.

💜 From small towns, to cold cases, to Park Rangers, her series are all different but still delivers the captivating mysteries to solve and great characters with their own problems to solve.

💜 The stories has more of a focus on the suspense/mystery thread than the romance, but the romance is realistic and will be well liked by fans of romance.

💜 Her heroes are strong and swoon-worthy, but still gets hurt and find themselves in dangerous situations.

💜 Her stories keeps me interested, guessing and she always has a twist which catches me by surprise.

💜 I will give up sleep to finish her stories.

1. Tell us, in two sentences, about you.

I live in the northeast corner of Mississippi with my two rescue kitties, Suzy and Tux. And I write Christian romantic suspense/murder mysteries…which sounds like an oxymoron.

2.  Who had the most influence in your life?

 Jesus. He changed everything about me.

3.  What is your greatest accomplishment to date?

 Family wise, my two girls, one here on earth and one in heaven. Career wise, my published books—I’m getting to live my dream life.

4.  What is the biggest mistake you have made?

 And you think I’d tell you? If I did, I’d have to…

5.  What do you love about the characters you create?

 They are flawed, just like me and everyone I know. J

6.  Why do you enjoy writing?

 Who said I did? Seriously, I can’t not write. If I did everyone around me would suffer…

7.  What genre do you enjoy reading?

 Suspense, romantic suspense, mysteries, cozies…

8.  Which authors is on your auto-buy list and give a short reason why.

There are so many: Elizabeth Goddard, Lynette Eason, Carrie Stuart Parks, Susan Sleeman…I’m stopping there, but there are many more. I like their stories. They often keep me up reading until two in the morning unless I start them earlier in the day.

9.  Have you discovered any new authors lately whose backlist you would like to read?

Luana Erlich is not a new to me author, but I have her backlist on my sagging TBR table and she’s next up!

10.  Why should readers read your books - what do you hope they learn from reading your stories?

 I hope they learn that Christians have problems just like everyone else, but that they solve problems differently that others. And that evil will not win!

11. Which of your books would you recommend a reader to start with?

It depends on what you’re looking for. J The Logan Point Series is my first and is set in a small town and that is the connecting factor. They’re all stand-alones. The Memphis Cold Case Novels are about cold cases, and my Natchez Trace Park Rangers series features both law enforcement rangers and interpretive rangers. Whichever series a reader chooses, I’d probably start with the first book in the series although all of them can be read out of order.

12. Anything else you want readers to know about you?

I love my readers and have created two blog series for them. The first drops into my website blog on Tuesdays and it’s my Mystery Question blog. In it, there are always four scenarios (usually about dumb criminals) and readers are asked to decide which crime I made up. The other is on Fridays and I review a book I’ve recently read. And I always have an encouraging meme on the blogs.

13.1 - kindle/paperback/audio –

Kindle or paperback—it doesn’t matter. I just can’t keep my ADHD mind focused on the audio books, although all of my books are available for audio.

Coffee in the morning, hot tea in the afternoon.

Depends on my mood. I’m addicted to both.

13.4 rain or sun –

Definitely sun.

13.5 morning person or night owl –

Morning…but I can get a second wind and stay up past midnight.

Author Discovery: Natalie Walters

So, I first got introduced to Natalie Walters when her first book, Living Lies, came up as Read Now on Netgalley.  To be 100% honest, I did enjoy her first book, but this new author had some big Romantic Suspense Names to live up to... Lynette Eason, Irene Hannon, Terri Blackstock, Colleen Coble and Susan May Warren, just to name a few favourites, so I added her name to follow, but at that point it was not a priority.

Lucky for me, I am OCD with series, so if I like a series I started, I definitely want to read all the books in the series, especially if it is in my favourite genre, Suspense.  So, then I picked up Deadly Deceit and this author went on my Next to Buy list, which is basically my priority book list when I have money to spend.

Why did this author won me over, to add to favourites among the big names I listed above?

💜  Her characters is real - they have their own issues and challenges they need to work through and it was easy to connect to them.

💜 The banter between her characters was fun!

💜 Her suspense kept me guessing and the twists and turns was not expected!

💜 This author seems down to earth and has time to personally connect with her readers.

Author Questions

1. Tell us, in two sentences, about you.

 I’m married to my Army soldier who I affectionately call GIJOE and we have three adult children and a son-in-love. I love reading, writing, traveling, game nights, tea, and chocolate.

 

2. Who had the most influence in your life?

 I would say my Gigipa. He’s no longer alive but when he was, he taught me to value family, creating memories, not to sweat the big stuff, and what true, unconditional, and sacrificial love is.

 

3. What is your greatest accomplishment to date?

 Raising my kids. Being a parent isn’t easy and I’ve made plenty of mistakes along the way but I am incredibly proud of my children.

 

4. What is the biggest mistake you have made?

 Not actually realizing how fleeting time is and getting caught up in the to-do’s of life instead of enjoying more time being present with my kids. There’s that quote, “The days are long but the years are short.” It’s so true, so if I could go back in time, I’d leave the dishes, laundry, chores, and play with my kids more, hug them more, read to them more, be with them more.

 

5. What do you love about the characters you create?

I love creating fun characters with their own sense of humor and flaws that make them vulnerable and so real I want to hang out with them in real life.

 

6. Why do you enjoy writing?

 I think this goes back to why I love reading. I love being transported into a life that’s not my own. Experience new things through the words of a story and I love doing that in my writing too.

 

7. What genre do you enjoy reading?

 Romantic suspense and contemporary romance

 

8. Which authors is on your auto-buy list and give a short reason why.

 Joel C. Rosenburg, fast-paced political thrillers seemingly ripped from the headlines that make my heart pound.

Melissa Tagg, strong characters, swoony romance, fabulous cast of characters that literally make me wish they were real and I could visit them.

 

9. Why should readers read your books—what do you hope they learn from reading your stories?

 I want readers to have fun when they read my books; to meet authentic characters who find their way into reader’s hearts; to experience exciting suspense; and to finish the book believing that hope exists through Christ no matter the circumstances any of us face.

 

10. Which of your books would you recommend a reader to start with?

 Probably Living Lies since it’s my debut novel and the message within is personal and special to my family.

 Or the first book in my new SNAP Agency series, Lights Out, which I think is just a really exciting plot and great team of characters.

 

11. Anything else you want readers to know about you?

Hanging out with readers is my favorite! They can find me on social media but I love getting to meet up in person too. Depending on where I travel, I’ll announce my location and meet up with local readers for a cup of tea and to chat all things life and books!

Author Discovery: Melissa Tagg

 Melissa Tagg is still a fairly new-to-me-author, though I know a lot of my Goodreads friends have read and loved all her books.  I've only read one series so far The Walker Family series, but I have a few of her books in my TBR, hoping to read it soon!

So, why did I enjoy her books and would recommend her work? 

Her characters was lovable and relatable, with some swoon-worthy romance scenes, characters with a past, looking for a second chance.  And some dashing down-to-earth heroes and a lot of fun, family banter and interactions.

And from what I saw on social media, Melissa Tagg, is also a humble, what-you-see-is-what-you-get person with a great heart and openness, which comes across in her writing.

Here is some interview questions to get to know Melissa Tagg better:

1. Tell us, in two sentences, about you.

In addition to being a writer, I’m a marketing and communications strategist for an amazing nonprofit, my nieces’ and nephews’ biggest fan, and a complete and total bookworm. I love baby goats and would eat Pop-Tarts every day if I could convince myself they were even slightly healthy.

 

2. Who had the most influence in your life?

Hands-down, my mom and dad. They’re simply the very best people I know and I’m beyond blessed to have been born to them. They’ve encouraged my dreams, pointed me toward a faith that’s become my own, and put up with my flaws for my whole life.

 

3. What is your greatest accomplishment to date?

Oh, wow, this is a hard one…on the one hand, I tend to be a pretty achievement-oriented person, so my temptation is to list this accomplishment or that award. But on the other hand, the older I’ve gotten, the more I’ve really tried not to measure my worth in what I do or achieve…but that is very much a work in progress. So, hmm, I think I’ll say this: balancing a full-time job that I love while also pursuing a writing career is probably my biggest challenge and the fact that I’m still juggling both after eight years of publishing books . . . well, that feels like an accomplishment. Haha!

 

4. What is the biggest mistake you have made?

I think I’ll harken back to that last answer and say that probably my biggest mistake in the past has been measuring my worth or significance in what I do or accomplish…and along with that, comparing myself to others. Any time I’ve let myself go down that road, it’s turned out to be a mistake and has only left me feeling stressed out or overwhelmed.

 

5. What do you love about the characters you create?

Oh goodness, I could spend paragraph after paragraph answering this because I fall hard for all my characters…especially my heroes. I love my heroes because I tend to infuse them with the kind of characteristics that would make me swoon in real life BUT I also give them flaws and wounds that help them feel real. I love my heroines because they tend to end up embodying whatever emotional journey I also happen to be on at the time…even when I’m not trying. Haha! I love them because they help me process my own emotions and faith and journey, even if my journey doesn’t look anything like theirs.

 

6. Why do you enjoy writing? 

I simply LOVE stories. I love reading them, I love telling them, I love sinking into them. I process so much of my life and faith through stories…they’re how I see the world.  

 

7. What genre do you enjoy reading?

Though I write contemporary stories, my favorite books to read tend to be historical romances. I looooove that genre! I also love stories with dual timelines…and even though I read more historical than anything else, I also enjoy plenty of contemporary romance, some women’s fiction and even YA now and then.

 

8. Which authors is on your auto-buy list and give a short reason why. 

Joanne Bischof, Amanda Dykes, Lori Benton Roseanna M. White, Laura Frantz, Mimi Matthews…and all for the same reason: They write historical romance that never, ever fails to mesmerize me!

 

9. Which of your books would you recommend a reader to start with? 

At this point, I would say either From the Start, which is the first book in my Walker Family series, or Now and Then and Always, which is the first book in my Maple Valley series. Both of these books give readers a good sense of my writing flavor and if you like the first in the series, you’ll probably like the rest!

 

10. Final preference questions: 

10.1 - kindle/paperback/audio – I loooove paperbacks for nostalgic reasons, but I looooove my kindle paperwhite for traveling reasons. 😃

10.3 sweet or savory – Can I please say both? Because I love ice cream but also chips. I love chocolate but also pizza. I want it all!

10.4 rain or sun – Hmm, that’s a toss-up depending on the day, but considering we’re the midst of a hot, humid summer, I’m definitely gonna say rain today.

10.6 favourite reading spot – ooh, that’s a hard one. But one of my favorite things is to wake up early on a Saturday when I don’t have to do anything else and get my coffee and stay in bed and read and read and read. So I’ll go ahead and say my bedroom.

Author Discovery: Terri Blackstock

 I still remember the first book I've read by Terri Blackstock:

I loved the characters, the plot, but wow, what I loved most was that I was taken on this suspenseful ride, staying up late to see how it ends, but also, even though this topic was crazy and scary, I was left with hope.

Since then I've added all of Terri Blackstock 's books to my TBR and read most of them.

Her chapters is also short, which adds to that fast-paced suspense feel.

I've got a few favourite series I've read, which I would highly recommend to fans of romantic suspense, If I run series and the Restoration series:

Author Discovery: Roseanna M White

 Roseanna M White was a name I saw a lot among my Goodreads friends and I remember wondering if and when I should read her stories and how it would stand out from other  Historical fiction authors.  I had the chance to find out when I downloaded The Lost Heiress, book 1 of the Ladies of the Manor series (still a favourite) when it was free on Amazon kindle and suddenly knew what all the fuss was about.

Why did I join in the Roseanna M White love?

💗 The plot:  Her stories are always entertaining, with a lot of fun moments between the characters and taking this reader on journeys not yet discovered.

💗The historical facts:  The author researches every topic thoroughly and I also learn something knew while I'm entertained with a great story.

💗The mystery/danger:  It is no secret that my favourite genre is suspense, and Roseanna M White always includes a bit of mystery and danger which has me on the edge of my seat for the characters.

💗The characters:  Her characters are some of the most unique, lovable and interesting ones I've met and their strong personalities, especially the female leads, makes them memorable.

I enjoyed the Ladies of the Manor series and the Shadows over England series (especially the family of thieves who is turned to spies for the government) and currently busy with Codebreaker series which was sort of in the Shadows over England series.

Even though I'm still working through Roseanna M White's backlist, I'm enjoying her stories and her latest release The Nature of a Lady 

was just as enjoyable as I've come to expect, and highly recommended to fans of Roseanna M White.

I had the privilege to ask Roseanna M White a few questions:

1.  Tell us, in two sentences, about you.

 I’m a wife, homeschooling mom, cover designer, editor, and of a course a writer. I hate cleaning my house and love anything that deals with the written word.

 

2.  Who had the most influence in your life?

 Wow, that’s a hard one! I was blessed with an amazing family who supported me and believed in me, so it’s hard to narrow it down to just one person. So I’ll just cheat and say “my family,” LOL.

 

3.  What is your greatest accomplishment to date?

 Man, you like the hard questions! I usually try not to rank the things in my life like that, so I’ll be nice and vague, ha ha, and say that it’s having managed to make a full-time career in the publishing world while also raising and homeschooling two awesome kids.

 

4.  What is the biggest mistake you’ve made?

 Plenty, but God has always redeemed all my missteps, so I don’t live with any regrets…and it’s hard to look back on things that led me where I needed to go and call them mistakes, so I’d say there’s nothing that really jumps out on this one.

 

5.  Your stories always includes strong characters with great personalities, especially the female lead - how to you create your characters?

 Stories are ALL about the characters for me! After I come up with my general premise, I just spent time getting to know the people who will flesh them out. What traits and interests will make that premise most interesting? Who are they at the beginning? Who do they need to grow into being by the end? Through what lens do they see the world? That last one is really what helps me give them each a unique voice. Libby sees everything through a scientific eye; Beth through an adventure-seeker’s spyglass; Emily through the gaze of someone who just wants a healthy relationship with her family. That lens will color every single scene, every single interaction, and help me dig deep into the hearts of my characters—all the way down to their soul, if I’m doing it right!

 

6.  Why do you enjoy writing historical stories?

 I’ve always been a lover of history! I just love how no matter the era, you can find echoes of our lives today, yet in history, there are so many fascinating things that we’ve all too often forgotten. With historical settings, I can show Truths that might be too in-your-face if I told them in a modern setting, but which invite reflection and introspection when they’re shown through that beautiful, sheer mask of history.

 

7.  What genre do you enjoy reading?

 I read quite widely. Anything romance—historical, contemporary, suspense, fantasy, whatever—is my go-to, and most of what I read is in the Christian space, but I love branching out and trying new things, so you’ll find everything from classics to sci-fi to kids’ books cramming my shelves.

 

8.  Which authors is on your auto-buy list and give a short reason why.

 Connilyn Cossette, Jaime Jo Wright, Lori Benton, Laura Frantz, Siri Mitchell, Stephanie Morrill, Kiera Cass (because my daughter and I love to read hers “together”), Ronie Kendig, Terri Blackstock, Lisa Wingate…just to name a few. And the answer is always the same—because they write amazing books, and I’ve never encountered one I didn’t love!

9.  Have you discovered any new authors lately whose backlist you would like to read?

 I actually just read my first Becky Wade last week—she’s been on my TBR pile forever but I just hadn’t picked one up yet. Finally did and loved it (of course!), and now I have to get caught up!!

 

10.  Why should readers read your books - what do you hope they learn from reading your stories?

 Well, I hope readers will pick up my books and come away with a few things—an experience that leaves them full, having laughed and contemplated and ached along with my characters. I pray they come away richer. I pray that they’re thoroughly entertained, but also that God will whisper some Truth about who He is to their hearts through the pages of my stories. If I can achieve that, then I know I’m being a faithful tool in His hand, which is all I ever want me and my stories to be.

 

11. For someone who still needs to read your books, which book should they start with?

 If you love straight-up historical romance with an English setting, I’d say to start either with The Lost Heiress, which begins the Ladies of the Manor Series and sets the foundation for my English world, or this new one, The Nature of a Lady, which is set a few years earlier and doesn’t rely at all on that world I’ve build. If you love American settings, then either A Heart’s Revolution, Dreams of Savannah (both of those are stand-alones), or the first in the Culper Ring series, Ring of Secrets, which introduces you to my family of spies. ;-) If you love ancient settings, then you’ll want to go back to either A Stray Drop of Blood (the crucifixion plays a pivotal role) or Jewel of Persia (my Esther story in which Esther isn’t the heroine, but rather the best friend of the heroine). I like to give people choices, LOL.

12. Anything else you want readers to know about you?

 I’m passionate not only about fictional stories, but also about preserving OUR stories! With that in mind, I’ve started a site called www.SeeingTheStory.com, where you can tell me YOUR stories—from your life, your community, your family, etc.—either in written form, audio, or even video. Those stories will then be available for you and your family and others forever. Because it’s only when we know each other’s stories that we can truly understand each other; and it’s only when we understand each other that we can truly love our neighbors.

Author Discovery: Susan May Warren

 Is Susan May Warren a tried and tested and love her! name in you reading lists?

Or is her name on your list of authors you still want to try but have not given a chance yet?

If you still need to read her books, maybe the reasons I love her will give you a shove to pick up her books a bit sooner than planned.  And if you love her, maybe for the same reasons I have her on my all-time favourite author list:

💗 She is versatile - with one book she will give me nail-biting suspense, in another, heart-breaking emotions and now she even gives me Time Travel!

💗 She provides me with communities and characters I grow to love and would love to meet.

💗 She gives me nail-biting, hold your breath action and suspense, and twists and turns I do not see coming.

Author Discovery: Lynette Eason

 This month I want to highlight one of my all time favourite Romantic Suspense authors: LYNETTE EASON.

I still remember the first time I devoured one of her books.  My parents gave it to me as a Christmas gift and I took it along on my Namibia overland trip, thinking I will read a bit on the road in times of boredom.  Well, when everyone else was sleeping, I was reading!

Needless to say, after that book I was literally hooked and have been reading her books ever since!

Why?

Well, she always delivers fast-paced, action packed suspense with twists and turns I don't see coming.

She usually keeps me guessing right up to 80% or have me second guessing my suspect until the reveal, which I love - I mean, who wants to know what is going to happen from the start!

The romance is secondary to the suspense!

She is not afraid to surprise her readers.  She has killed a lovable character or two...

And I have not met a character I did not like.

 I still remember how I felt after I read my first book:  

I was smiling and thinking that was fun!  Then I went and added all her books published to date to my Amazon Wishlist and slowly but surely started reading and enjoying them.

 Why do I enjoy Karen Witemeyer's books?

She gives me plots which I 100% enjoy - history with suspense or action.

She gives me characters I adore - I have never met a boring character in her books.  And even though she writes historical fiction, her ladies are spunky, go getters not afraid of adventure!

She gives me swoon-worthy, geeky smile on your face romance!

I just Love all the lessons I learn through her characters.  There is always something that a characters says or learns which stuck with me!
