My rating: 💛💛💛💛
Oh, I enjoyed this. This character driven story flowed at a slow, steady pace and then picked up speed towards the end. The author always does a great job with her historical research and I enjoyed the aviation part of the facts as well.
I LOVED that the character from the Ladies of the Manor series was friends of Ava and Cam. I loved that series and so glad to visit with them, even for very short glimpses.
Ava and Cam is probably one of my favourite characters and couples that was penned to date by this author. I loved how their relationship started as friendship and how this friendship added to them being totally honest and vulnerable with each other.
This story was such a true reflection of "Don't judge the book by the cover", because there was so much more to both Ava and Cam than what society stamped on them and that, for me, was the true beauty of this story. Cam's brother's statement that Cam can either be a villain or a hero was so spot on and I kept turning the pages to finally find out the truth about the Incident.
Ava was such a Nightingale and her actions was such a true reflection of her close relationship with God. I loved her eccentric, adventurous father.
Other supporting characters, like Cam's mother, also made this story for me. And the true villain was surprising and unexpected.
I would highly recommend this to fans of historical romance.

About the book:
All of England thinks Phillip Camden a monster--a man who deliberately caused the deaths of his squadron. But as nurse Arabelle Denler watches the so-dubbed "Black Heart" every day, she sees something far different: a hurting man desperate for mercy. And when their paths twist together and he declares himself her new protector, she realizes she has her own role to play in his healing.
Phillip Camden would have preferred to die that day with his squadron rather than be recruited to the Admiralty's codebreaking division. The threats he receives daily are no great surprise and, in his opinion, well deserved. What comes as a shock is the reborn desire to truly live that Arabelle inspires in him.
But when an old acquaintance shows up and seems set on using him in a plot that has the codebreakers of Room 40 in a frenzy, new affections are put to the test.
