Review: The Saturday Night Supper Club

The Saturday Night Supper Club The Saturday Night Supper Club by Carla Laureano
My rating: 💛💛💛💛

I am a foodie but since having my two boys, do not have time to experience dining at its finest on a regular basis anymore. So, experiencing it in this story was a real joy.

Sometimes with a foodie book, there is a risk that there is possibly too much focus on the food (if possible) but not with this one. Both Rachel and Alex provided the reader with so much history, struggles and dreams to discover, that it kept the interest. I loved the relationship Rachel had with her friends, which I hope will we see more off in the series and the sweet romance developing between Rachel and Alex.

This was the first time that I have read a Carla Laureano book. Her stories flow smoothly which makes reading easy and enjoyable.

About the book:

Denver chef Rachel Bishop has accomplished everything she’s dreamed and some things she never dared hope, like winning a James Beard Award and heading up her own fine-dining restaurant. But when a targeted smear campaign causes her to be pushed out of the business by her partners, she vows to do whatever it takes to get her life back . . . even if that means joining forces with the man who inadvertently set the disaster in motion.

Essayist Alex Kanin never imagined his pointed editorial would go viral. Ironically, his attempt to highlight the pitfalls of online criticism has the opposite effect: it revives his own flagging career by destroying that of a perfect stranger. Plagued by guilt-fueled writer’s block, Alex vows to do whatever he can to repair the damage. He just doesn’t expect his interest in the beautiful chef to turn personal.

Alex agrees to help rebuild Rachel’s tarnished image by offering his connections and his home to host an exclusive pop-up dinner party targeted to Denver’s most influential citizens: the Saturday Night Supper Club. As they work together to make the project a success, Rachel begins to realize Alex is not the unfeeling opportunist she once thought he was, and that perhaps there’s life?and love?outside the pressure-cooker of her chosen career. But can she give up her lifelong goals without losing her identity as well?

Review: Invitation

Invitation Invitation by Bill Myers
My rating: 💛💛💛💛

This book was weird, creepy, and edging on supernatural, but also one I couldn't stop listening to.

Weird things are happening and is it a science element or aliens or something else...After reading the first collection of stories, I am not sure but will read the next collection.

Each Chapter of the collection is written by a different author and from the POV of a different character and I enjoyed each one. I think currently I love Tank and enjoyed his POV the most.

Different narrators also told each installment, and the audio was well delivered.

About the book:

Four bestselling authors unite for thrilling supernatural thriller: Bringing together four stories, The Invitation is the first book in the Heralds series.
THE CALL by Bill Myers, THE HAUNTED by Frank Peretti, THE WATCHMEN by Angela Hunt, THE GIRL by Alton Gansky. Five characters - with gifts they don't fully understand - are mysteriously brought together to fight growing pockets of darkness across the world: Brenda, the tattoo artist who walks the streets and sees images of the future. The teacher, the ex-priest atheist ruled by logic. Andi, the professor's brilliant-but-geek assistant, who sees inexplicable patterns. Tank, the big-hearted, naive athlete with a surprising connection to healing power. Daniel, the institutionalized ten-year-old boy who can see the supernatural world.
First brought together in "The Ring", the five soon realize that pockets of darkness are rising across the world. Whether it involves a mysterious house, the inexplicable death of animals around the world, or a supernatural little girl, each puzzle they solve brings them closer to the ultimate explanation of what's going on. But will they discover the truth in time.

Review: A Cowboy for Keeps

A Cowboy for Keeps A Cowboy for Keeps by Jody Hedlund
My rating: 💛💛💛

This was a sweet marriage of convenient story, one where yes, you can sort of see where it is going, but also can't stop reading to see if it will.

With the added adventures of a child tending to get into trouble, a very well written bad guy you just can't help not to like and a dashing cowboy with a deep and heartbreaking backstory, the author gave readers plenty to enjoy and love about the story.

The epilogue intrigued me a lot to want to continue the series to discover more about Wyatt's siblings.

Judd was a great supporting character, with his wisdom and well-timed comments.

Review: No Way Up

No Way Up No Way Up by Mary Connealy
My rating: 💛💛💛

I was quite surprised at how this book started - with all three kids having no real commitment to each other or their family legacy. From reading the novella, I had a different expectation of how the children's relationship would be towards their father and the land, especially Cole.

I really loved Heath and his stability he added to the story. The adventure, though sometimes unrealistic for the time, added to a fun read, especially how the brothers felt about the developing romance and trying to be the protective brothers.

It seems like I missed an entire series about Heath's family, which I need to get to soon!

I am planning to continue with this series.

About the book:

When Cimarron ranch patriarch Chance Boden is caught in an avalanche, the quick actions of hired hand Heath Kincaid save him. Badly injured, Chance demands that his will be read and its conditions be enforced immediately.

Without anyone else to serve as a witness, Heath is pressed into reading the will. If Justin, Sadie, and Cole Boden don't live and work at home for the entire year, the ranch will go to their low-down cousin Mike.

Then Heath discovers the avalanche was a murder attempt, and more danger might follow. Deeply involved with the family, Heath's desire to protect Sadie goes far beyond friendship. The danger keeps them close together, and their feelings grow until being apart is the last thing on their minds.

Review: Honor's Refuge

Honor's Refuge Honor's Refuge by Hallee Bridgeman
My rating: 💛💛💛💛

Just from reading the opening line, it was clear that this book would be emotional and intense.

Warning: this book deals with physical abuse, so might be a sensitive subject for some readers.

Phil and Melissa were characters with so much individual history, baggage, and insecurities to work through. Especially Phil who had to find his worth after losing his leg and had to learn how to still be the strong soldier he is. I loved the scene where God answered Melissa's prayer in an obvious and physical way.

I also appreciated how the author balanced the intensity and emotions, with the physical action and danger, and more lighter scenes.

I enjoyed this series and would recommend it to fans of military and romantic suspense.

After losing a leg to a gunshot wound in the line of duty, Phil Osbourne has felt like a man without a purpose--until he hears Melissa's story and decides to use his Special Forces contacts to track down her missing sister. He knows what he discovers will break Melissa's heart. What he doesn't realize is that helping the women reunite will bring the cartel down on them like the Category 5 hurricane striking Miami.

Review: Targeted: Three Romantic Suspense Novellas

Targeted: Three Romantic Suspense Novellas Targeted: Three Romantic Suspense Novellas by Lynette Eason
My rating: 💛💛💛💛

This collection of novellas from three exceptional romantic suspense authors will provide fans of this genre with a thrilling escape into the fictional world.

This novella show cased all the strengths of each writer which was easy to compare with these back-to-back novellas. From Lynette Eason's talent to throw her readers into one dangerous and action-packed situation to the next, with the focus more on the suspense than the romance, to Lynn H Blackburn's way to balance the romance and suspense element and Natalie Walter's talent with fun banter between the characters while they are solving crimes.

It is difficult to select a favourite, because each book has its own strengths (and some weaknesses). I enjoyed all three novellas a lot.

Review: The 49th Mystic (Beyond the Circle, #1)

The 49th Mystic (Beyond the Circle, #1) The 49th Mystic (Beyond the Circle, #1) by Ted Dekker
My rating: 💛💛💛

Ted Dekker always takes my mind on a crazy complexed mind turning journey in his stories.

This was another story where I can't relax or get comfortable for one second, because suddenly, in the next paragraph, I'm thrown for a loop. I still somewhat feel confused after finishing this book.

After reading reviews, it seems is would have been better to read The Circle Series first, since most of the key characters we get to know first in that series. So, I think I will be reading that soon.

This book was based on the prophecies we read in Revelations, so readers who likes end of the world stories and stories playing off in other worlds, will enjoy this one. But maybe start with the circle series first.

About the book:

Some say the great mystery of how one can live in two worlds at once died with Thomas Hunter many years ago. Still others that the gateway to that greater reality was and is only the stuff of dreams.

They are wrong. In the small town of Eden, Utah, a blind girl named Rachelle Matthews is about to find out just how wrong.

When a procedure meant to restore Rachelle's sight goes awry, she begins to dream of another world so real that she wonders if Earth might only be a dream experienced when she falls asleep in that reality. Who is a simple blind girl to have such strange and fantastic dreams?

She's the prophesied one who must find and recover five ancient seals--in both worlds--before powerful enemies destroy her. If Rachelle succeeds in her quest, peace will reign. If she fails, both worlds will forever be locked in darkness.

So begins a two-volume saga of high stakes and a mind-bending quest to find an ancient path that will save humanity. The clock is ticking; the end rushes forward.

When bodies start showing up with Peter's MO, Sam and Grace are both called in to consult. They've met before--and though Grace thought they'd made a real connection, Sam ghosted her. They'll have to get past the awkwardness and mistrust to solve this case--especially because it's about to get personal.

Top Ten Tuesday: Thankful Freebie

Join in the Top Ten Tuesday fun! Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.

There is so many topics this could take me on.  But I think I will focus on 10 things in my life I am thankful for - some which might cause me some moments of impatience, but with the current daily challenges, I feel it is important for me to focus on the blessings in my life!

1. I am thankful for my husband - he is a great supporter in all areas of life, makes me laugh and calms me down in my freak out moments.

2. I am grateful for my boys - yes, some days I want to give them back, but that is like 5% of the time - their adventurous and no fear spirits keeps me on my toes and I love their joy for life - I need more of that!

3. Being able to exercise and run! Such a great stress reliever!

4. Going on new adventures and making new memories with my husband and kids and now the puppy.  Sometimes I get so pulled into routine, that doing something fun helps me focus on what is important and not be so serious!

5. Health!

6. My unending Kindle books on my TBR - sometimes we just need that fictional escape to be able to handle real life better!

7. The various volumes of great authors! My TBR never ends and while I am waiting for the newest from my favourite author, I have a lot of options to fill the void!

8. Kindle sales! - every sent counts currently!

9. Friends - real and fictional - we are not made to do life alone, so I love spending quality time with the special people in my life!

10. Nature! I am an outdoors girl and feel revived after spending some time in nature. And now that we are entering our summer here in South Africa, going to the beach or going on picnics is good for the soul!

Review: Betrayer

Betrayer Betrayer by Camille Elliot
My rating: 💛💛💛💛

What a great new installment to this historical regency serial. Due to unforeseen health issues, readers had to wait quit a long time to see what is happening in this crazy regency world.

I enjoyed my time back with Lady Lynwood, Phoebe, Uncle Sol, and the spies. The historical settings are very well written, and the added poison element is adds a unique and speculative feel.

There was character growth, delving deeper in characters' past, danger, plans to execute and a betrayal no one was expecting, which ended this book on a Cliffhanger and making readers wanting the next installment now! And luckily per communication from the author, should be within a month after the release of Betrayer.

Each book in this series ends in a cliffhanger, so you need to read each book in order. The first book Archer (Lady Wynwood’s Spies #1) by Camille Elliot is currently $0.99 if you want to get into this series.

About the book:

A Christian Historical Adventure set in Regency England with romance and a supernatural twist
Part four in an epic-length serial novel

Beleaguered spies

Lady Wynwood’s team of spies are trying to heal from the physical and mental wounds recently dealt to them. However, their investigation into Apothecary Jack’s mysterious group has turned up only a few strange, disjointed clues, and the dangerous Root elixir continues to circulate in the London underbelly. It is only a matter of time before the Root is sold to Napoleon, which would give him overwhelming dominance in the war.

Sudden threats

Then Laura, Lady Wynwood, is unexpectedly attacked by a man she had trusted. Although Phoebe and her household staff manage to protect her, her life is now in danger and she must go into hiding.

Dangerous mysteries

Laura uncovers more secrets kept by her late husband that shed illumination on his enigmatic mistress, Bianca. In the meantime, the team follows the trail of Laura’s attacker, which might enable them to capture Apothecary Jack or his compatriot, the pale-eyed man.

All the while, they are unaware that the hunters have become the hunted.

PLEASE NOTE: Like the novels published in Jane Austen’s time, this is a novel in multiple parts. Each volume has a completed story arc, but this is NOT a stand-alone novel and ends on a cliffhanger.
