Review: Random Acts of Murder

Random Acts of Murder Random Acts of Murder by Christy Barritt
My rating: 💛💛💛💛
I do not know why I waited so long to read this book.

I really enjoyed this romantic suspense with a few humorous moments. Holly Anna was an interesting character and though I found myself a bit frustrated a few times because I felt so she should have been upfront with Chase, I enjoyed following the clues and murders to the reveal of the murderer.

I am looking forward to more future Holly Anna and Chase adventures.

Review: Just Look Up

Just Look Up Just Look Up by Courtney Walsh
My rating: 💛💛💛💛

Just Look Up was a slow building, deep emotional contemporary fiction.

I bought and listened to the audiobook which I really enjoyed, and I think I was more invested because I was listening to the audiobook vs reading the book version.

Lane Kelley had a lot of emotional struggles from her younger years, which drew her to be driven and to prove she is the best person for the job. I adored Brooks as the male hero.

This might not be an easy book for all readers, since there is a subtle story line of emotional bullying due to physical appearance/not being part of the popular crowd but though this is a difficult topic, so relevant to what most girls are facing growing up.

The ending was one of my favourite scenes.

View all my reviews

About the book:

After tirelessly climbing the ranks of her Chicago-based interior design firm, Lane Kelley is about to land her dream promotion when devastating news about her brother draws her back home--a quaint tourist town full of memories she'd just as soon forget. With her cell phone and laptop always within reach, Lane aims to check on her brother while staying focused on work--something her eclectic family doesn't understand.

Ryan Brooks never expected to settle down in Harbor Pointe, Michigan, but after his final tour of duty, it was the only place that felt like home. Now knee-deep in a renovation project that could boost tourism for the struggling town, he is thrilled to see Lane, the girl he secretly once loved, even if the circumstances of her homecoming aren't ideal.

Their reunion gets off to a rocky start, however, when Ryan can't find a trace of the girl he once knew in the woman she is today. As he slowly chips away at the walls Lane has built, secrets from his past collide with a terrible truth even he is reluctant to believe. Facing a crossroads that could define his future with Lane and jeopardize his relationship with the surrogate family he's found in the Kelleys, Ryan hopes Lane can see that maybe what really matters has been right in front of her all along--if only she'd just look up.

Oh no.

Enter Cash Thomas, a widowed trauma surgeon struggling to raise his autistic daughter, Penny. Review: The Sleuth of Blackfriars Lane

The Sleuth of Blackfriars Lane The Sleuth of Blackfriars Lane by Michelle Griep
My rating: 💛💛💛

Rating 3.5

I really liked books one and two and set out expecting to like this third book in the series as well.

However, for me, the first half of the book was really going at a slow pace. It was only after the 50% mark when the pace, action, suspenseful moments increased along with my enjoyment of the story.

Included in this story were still the unique descriptive words the author is known for, along with all the weird quirky characters the author can come up with.

What I really loved about this book though, is how Kit grew into her new identity and had to discover how to still be her while taking on the new titles and responsibilities of being a wife and mother.

Review: Double Indemnity

Double Indemnity Double Indemnity by Robert Whitlow
My rating: 💛💛💛

This was an interesting legal thriller with the author explaining the legal terms in such a matter that any reader from the street can follow the legal communications.

This was a slow building mystery for me. I had my suspects, and it seemed to all fall into place in the end.

Conner and Liz were interesting characters and easy to connect with. I especially enjoyed Conner’s story where he had to keep his faith amidst the challenges he faced, while also trying to lead and motivate a church.

About the book:

Someone stands to gain millions of dollars from a hunter’s accidental death . . . unless that death wasn’t an accident. Matt and Elena Thompson present the picture of perfection. But their enviable life isn’t all it seems. Their marriage is on the rocks, and financial disaster looms. Then Matt is killed in a hunting accident, and the questions and accusations begin to mount. Attorney Liz Acosta, newly arrived in the mountains of north Georgia after graduating from law school, plans to get some job experience on her resume before returning home to seek a position with a big-time firm. Intellectual pastor Connor Grantham isn’t sure that shepherding a rural congregation is what he ultimately wants to do with his life. Drawn to philosophy, theology, and nature, he’s beginning to feel more at home in north Georgia—especially after he meets the brilliant and energetic Liz. While Liz and Connor spend more time with each other and discover just how compatible two people from wildly different backgrounds can be, they’re also being drawn into the shadowy world of Matt and Elena Thompson. As the couple’s marriage counselor, Connor finds himself in the middle of their explosive arguments. As Elena’s attorney, Liz is caught in the tailspin created by Matt’s death. Together, Connor and Liz attempt to solve the mystery of what really happened to Matt. If his death is ruled an accident, then the double indemnity clause in his life insurance would go into effect, essentially doubling the payout. But as Liz sorts through the legal paperwork of who stands to gain an immense sum of money from Matt’s death, Connor is accused of the unthinkable with much more at stake than millions of dollars.

Review: Dubiosity

Dubiosity Dubiosity by Christy Barritt
My rating: 💛💛💛

Dubiosity was my first book by this author, and I can understand why so many readers recommend Christy Barritt.

Between these pages I found an action-packed mystery which kept me engaged.

Though I did guess the suspect correctly just because of some suspicious behaviour, it was still fun to see if I was correct.

I was a bit surprised that Savannah shared her suspicions so easily to people possibly involved.

Overall an enjoyable presentation.

About the book: Everything's Coming Up Josey

'I need you,' the tall, ridiculously good-looking missionary had declared, his words reverberating through the entire church. Wait—he wasn’t talking just to Josey? Oops, because suddenly she’s not in Gull Lake, Minnesota anymore. Instead, she's found herself in Moscow, Russia, as a missionary for a whole year. Oy! Really, she just wanted to escape her chaotic hometown, where her sister ran off and married her ex, and her heart still pines for Chase, 'the one that got away.' Review: Riot

Riot Riot by Ronie Kendig
My rating: 💛💛💛💛

Riot was an action-packed military thriller, filled with suspenseful moments, heartbreaking events, and some fun lol moments when Paisley struggled to keep Riot controlled.

“Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ,” Paisley recited Galatians 6:2. “I’m so grateful to God for our friendship.”

This author was mentored by Ronie Kendig, and it ended in a great novel with a lot of accurate military language, great banter among team members, descriptive action scenes and dealing with hard realistic issues.

Beau (Danger) and Paisely were strong characters with a lot of hurt from the past which still crept through in the present. Their pasts were not pretty but they tried each day to make the best of their today.

this crazy peace. When I asked her about it, she told me that if my image of God depends on my experiences and feelings, my faith will constantly waver. But if I hold on to who the Bible says He is, nothing can shake my faith. That changed everything for me.”

Riot - I loved this four-legged hero. I felt that the author did a great job of showing the loving attitude of man’s best friend, but the dangerous war-hero side as well.

I also loved the way the characters’ spiritual struggles and faith came naturally as part of the plot and who the characters were.

Bravery isn’t being fearless. It’s being scared and doing it anyway.”

I love this series and am looking forward to the last two books coming out later this year.

Review: A Noble Scheme

A Noble Scheme A Noble Scheme by Roseanna M. White
My rating: 💛💛💛💛

Rating 4.5

Graham had given up on insisting he wasn’t having a crisis of faith. Given up trying to explain that it wasn’t that he doubted God’s existence—it was that he doubted His goodness. It wasn’t that He questioned for a minute whether or not He was Lord—it was that he couldn’t believe the Lord loved them like James insisted He did. All evidence pointed to the contrary.

Roseanna M White always delivers unique plots with equally enjoyable unique characters.

This book was different for me to the author’s previous stories. There was still the same unique and fun mystery to solve and the intriguing banter between characters, but there was this deep emotional history between Graham and Gemma.

From book one, it was clear that there was a past between Graham and Gemma, and through the first part of the book, the author gave the reader a bit more information and clues, but I found myself impatient to see what happened and once revealed it was the last thing I expected.

The author did a brilliant job of making the reader feel Graham’s hopelessness, and Gemma’s hatred and struggle with unforgiveness.

Be prepared to be swept away on an emotional journey and keep the tissues handy.

Yates was a fun character to learn more about and I am looking forward to his story coming soon.
