Shadowed Loyalty

About the book:

Sabina Mancari never questioned her life as the daughter of Chicago’s leading mob boss until bullets tear apart her world and the man she thought she loved turned out to be an undercover Prohibition agent. Now she sees how ugly the underworld can be. Ambushes, bribes, murder, prostitution—she thought her beloved Papa was above all that, but clearly he isn’t. What does that mean, though, for her and their family? Maybe Lorenzo, the fiancΓ© who has barely paid her any attention in the last two years, has the right idea by planning to escape their world.

All his life, Lorenzo’s family assumed he would join the Church, but he has different ideas—marrying Sabina and pursuing a career in the law. But despite his morals, he knows at the core he isn’t so unlike his father and brothers, which has always terrified him. Has he, in trying to protect Sabina from his flaws, in fact harmed her? It sure seems that way when he realizes he all but forced her into the arms of the Prohibition Agent now bent on tearing her family apart at all costs. But how can they rebuild what has so long been neglected…and do it in the shadow of the dark empire of the Mafia?

Shadowed Loyalty, set amid the glitz and scandal of the Roaring Twenties, examines what love really means and how we draw lines between family and our own convictions, especially when following the one could mean losing the other.

Book Beginnings

The wind tore down the alley, forcing Sabina Mancari to hold her cloche hat in place with one hand as she stepped around the corner.

Friday 56

The morning was bright, warm, and leaning towards afternoon by the time Sally stepped out into it.

My thoughts so far

So, I still need to start this one, but high expectations that I would enjoy it!

Review: The Illusionist's Apprentice

The Illusionist's Apprentice The Illusionist's Apprentice by Kristy Cambron
My rating: πŸ’›πŸ’›πŸ’›

When I started this story, I was in two minds about continuing it. Main reason: It opened on a spiritualism scene and trying to bring someone up from the dead. I avoid these type of topics, because the Bible is clear to not deal with these things. I continued, because Elliot and the FBI was after the truth of what really happened (how the audience were tricked to believe that the Illusion is real).

I really enjoyed the mystery and suspense plot. There was an intriguing mystery to solve, a lot of twists thrown in and a revelation at the end I did not expect.

There was also a lot of heartbreak and loss when Wren's past was revealed. I was really emotional at some parts.

But for some reason, the story just did not provide me with a more than 3-star read. I did not connect so well with Wren. Some scenes felt jumpy from one to the other with me feeling I've missed a few things, and with the topic of illusions and spiritualism, I wanted more of God and his power and light.

About the book:

Harry Houdini’s one-time apprentice holds fantastic secrets about the greatest illusionist in the world. But someone wants to claim them . . . or silence her before she can reveal them on her own.

Boston, 1926. Jenny “Wren” Lockhart is a bold eccentric—even for a female vaudevillian. As notorious for her inherited wealth and gentleman’s dress as she is for her unsavory upbringing in the back halls of a vaudeville theater, Wren lives in a world that challenges all manner of conventions.

In the months following Houdini’s death, Wren is drawn into a web of mystery surrounding a spiritualist by the name of Horace Stapleton, a man defamed by Houdini’s ardent debunking of fraudulent mystics in the years leading up to his death. But in a public illusion that goes terribly wrong, one man is dead and another stands charged with his murder. Though he’s known as one of her teacher’s greatest critics, Wren must decide to become the one thing she never wanted to be: Stapleton’s defender.

Forced to team up with the newly formed FBI, Wren races against time and an unknown enemy, all to prove the innocence of a hated man. In a world of illusion, of the vaudeville halls that showcase the flamboyant and the strange, Wren’s carefully constructed world threatens to collapse around her.

Layered with mystery, illusion, and the artistry of the Jazz Age’s bygone vaudeville era, The Illusionist’s Apprentice is a journey through love and loss and the underpinnings of faith on each life’s stage.

Can't Wait Wednesday! Fatal Code

Can't Wait Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Wishful Endings that spotlights and discusses the books we're excited about that we've yet to read. Generally, they're books that are yet to be released. It's based on Waiting on Wednesday, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine.

So excited to continue this series in May 2022!

About the book: Fatal Code

In 1964, a group of scientists called the Los Alamos Five came close to finishing a nuclear energy project for the United States government when they were abruptly disbanded. Now the granddaughter of one of those five scientists, aerospace engineer Elinor Mitchell, discovers that she has highly sensitive information on the project in her possession--and a target on her back.

SNAP agent and former Navy cryptologist Kekoa Young is tasked with monitoring Elinor. This is both convenient since she's his neighbor in Washington, DC, and decidedly inconvenient because . . . well, he kind of likes her.

As Elinor follows the clues her grandfather left behind to a top-secret nuclear project, Kekoa has no choice but to step in. When Elinor learns he has been spying on her, she's crushed. But with danger closing in on all sides, she'll have to trust him to ensure her discoveries stay out of enemy hands.

Natalie Walters sucks you into the global race for space domination in this perfectly paced second installment of her SNAP Agency romantic suspense series.

Top Ten Tuesday: 21st Century Books I Think Will Become Classics

Join in the Top Ten Tuesday fun! Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.

I'm not really feeling this topic, so I think I would rather go with: Popular 21st century books I have not read and not planning on reading:

1.  The Harry Potter books.

2.  The Twilight series

3.  Lord of the rings - I've watched the moves, and I don't know, not really 'moved' to read the books, though my husband do own the books.

4. The Da Vinci Code

5.  The Hunger Games

6.  The Help

7.  50 Shades of Grey series

8.  Life of Pi

9.  A Thousand Splendid Suns

10.  The Kite Runner

Why won't I be reading them?  Either I watched the movie and my interest is done and dusted or there is some personal reasons why I won't be reading it.  Luckily for me, there is a lot of books and authors in my reading taste which I still need to devour. πŸ˜€

Review: Malicious Intent

Malicious Intent Malicious Intent by Lynn H. Blackburn
My rating: πŸ’›πŸ’›πŸ’›

I was really excited to read Gil and Ivy's story, since we learned in book one that there is some history between them, and what a history it was.

I love the Secret Service team. The way they work well together, developed a friendship and how they handle their cases are interesting. I also love that we see characters from the first series popping back up here.

The action and suspense was fast paced and what I want in a suspense, though it was a bit limited compared to the romance portion. But the times I was held in suspense provided me with that thrill I enjoy.

The romance, this is where I lost some enjoyment in the story. I enjoyed Gil and Ivy as individuals, and also together, but there were small things for me, which made this not the favourite romance I have read. Small things from a nickname I did not like (I keep thinking of a pony), to the realistic assumption that they know each after a 15-year gap and the epilogue which did not match to children aged 9 and 8.

Overall it was an enjoyable romantic suspense, and one which are receiving high ratings on Goodreads.

This can be read as a standalone, though I did enjoying knowing the history of all the characters involved.

*I received a complimentary copy from the publisher. All opinions expressed are my own.*

Review: Chasing Shadows

Chasing Shadows Chasing Shadows by Lynn Austin
My rating: πŸ’›πŸ’›πŸ’›πŸ’›πŸ’›

“Don’t hate them,” Mama said as if reading Ans’s mind. “They’ll win if we hate them.”

Firstly, this cover is just gorgeous.

I have read a lot of WW2 stories over the last three months and this one was by far my favourite for 2022 to date. I was so captivated by the story of Lena, Ans, Miriam and Eloise, that sometimes I found myself on pause with whatever I was doing and just sitting and listening.

The author did an excellent job of capturing not only my interest, but my emotions while I learned about the struggles and fight of the Dutch. Not only did the characters have the physical struggle of the German invasion and the limitations that involved, but each one of them had their own emotional and spiritual struggle and journey through this horrible period.

I loved the fact that this book taught me about a different group of people who was intimately involved in the WW2. I have read a lot of books which was focused on the Jews in the concentration camps, but this story helped me realised there was a group who was in the background and did whatever they could to help those targeted by the Nazis.

The Biblical lessons in this book was rich and thought provoking - what would you sacrifice to help the oppressed? How would you stand in your faith in similar circumstances? How would you show God's Love to others, even your enemies?

One of my favourite scenes was between Lena and a German soldier. Why? Because it showed a different side to quite a hated group and showed that there is still an individual with his own struggles behind that ugly uniform.

Loved this book and everyone should read it.

About the book:

Lena is a wife and mother who farms alongside her husband in the tranquil countryside. Her faith has always been her compass, but can she remain steadfast when the questions grow increasingly complex and the answers could mean the difference between life and death?

Lena’s daughter Ans has recently moved to the bustling city of Leiden, filled with romantic notions of a new job and a young Dutch police officer. But when she is drawn into Resistance work, her idealism collides with the dangerous reality that comes with fighting the enemy.

Miriam is a young Jewish violinist who immigrated for the safety she thought Holland would offer. She finds love in her new country, but as her family settles in Leiden, the events that follow will test them in ways she could never have imagined.

The Nazi invasion propels these women onto paths that cross in unexpected, sometimes-heartbreaking ways. Yet the story that unfolds illuminates the surprising endurance of the human spirit and the power of faith and love to carry us through.

About the author:

For many years, Lynn Austin nurtured a desire to write but frequent travels and the demands of her growing family postponed her career. When her husband's work took Lynn to Bogota, Colombia, for two years, she used the B.A. she'd earned at Southern Connecticut State University to become a teacher. After returning to the U.S., the Austins moved to Anderson, Indiana, Thunder Bay, Ontario, and later to Winnipeg, Manitoba.

It was during the long Canadian winters at home with her children that Lynn made progress on her dream to write, carving out a few hours of writing time each day while her children napped. Lynn credits her early experience of learning to write amid the chaos of family life for her ability to be a productive writer while making sure her family remains her top priority.

Extended family is also very important to Austin, and it was a lively discussion between Lynn, her mother, grandmother (age 98), and daughter concerning the change in women's roles through the generations that sparked the inspiration for her novel Eve's Daughters.

Along with reading, two of Lynn's lifelong passions are history and archaeology. While researching her Biblical fiction series, Chronicles of the Kings, these two interests led her to pursue graduate studies in Biblical Backgrounds and Archaeology through Southwestern Theological Seminary. She and her son traveled to Israel during the summer of 1989 to take part in an archaeological dig at the ancient city of Timnah. This experience contributed to the inspiration for her novel Wings of Refuge.

Lynn resigned from teaching to write full-time in 1992. Since then she has published 27 novels. Eight of her historical novels, Hidden Places, Candle in the Darkness, Fire by Night, A Proper Pursuit, and Until We Reach Home have won Christy Awards in 2002, 2003, 2004, 2008, and 2009 for excellence in Christian Fiction. Fire by Night was also one of only five inspirational fiction books chosen by Library Journal for their top picks of 2003, and All She Ever Wanted was chosen as one of the five inspirational top picks of 2005. Lynn's novel Hidden Places has been made into a movie for the Hallmark Channel, starring actress Shirley Jones. Ms Jones received a 2006 Emmy Award nomination for her portrayal of Aunt Batty in the film.

Review: A Rose for the Resistance

A Rose for the Resistance A Rose for the Resistance by Angela K. Couch
My rating: πŸ’›πŸ’›πŸ’›

Rating 3.5

This story started out with an action scene which created feelings of loss, fear and danger and set the expectation for the rest of the book. Though there was a lot of dangerous events, that suspense feeling I was expected and wanted did not come across.

What I did appreciate about this book was the different focus on the Nazi soldier, Franz, who did not agree with what was happening, felt forced to do as required, and in little ways, did what he could to help his "enemies".

The love triangle was different, Rose being caught between two soldiers, one her enemy and one her ally.

There was a few things mentioned briefly which did not provide a conclusion, which makes me wonder why it was mentioned.

Though I expected a bit more of a suspense feel, I did enjoy this WW2 story.

Review: Sidetracked

Sidetracked Sidetracked by Brandilyn Collins
My rating: πŸ’›πŸ’›πŸ’›πŸ’›

From the start of this book, this was one thrilling ride. The author did an excellent job jumping between the present time and the past and bringing everything together.

Laura was taken through a crazy and emotional journey. She had to deal with a lot of anger, grief and even hate towards her circumstances.

“In the end, God will judge. But we can’t always see a happy ending to the story in our lifetime. What we can do is make the best of the life we have left. Let God help you do that.”

I did guess the murderer from the start - it was a bit obvious - but what was scary was how fast the police just accepted that evidence proof their theory. But, there was also a few moments where I second guess myself and was wondering if there was a different twist coming.

Recommended to fans of Romantic Suspense.

Review: Driving Force

Driving Force Driving Force by Lynette Eason
My rating: πŸ’›πŸ’›πŸ’›πŸ’›

For a debut author, the standard was very high.

When I first saw this season from Sunrise will take me back to Elite Guardians, I was super excited. But also, a bit nervous because Lynette Eason is a favourite author and I always have high expectations when I see her name. Kate Angelo did not disappoint.

Driving Force was a thrilling right from the first pages right till the end. The danger to the characters was around every corner, and the action fast paced and realistic.

Grey and Christina, both with their military back grounds, had great back stories, baggage to work through and I appreciated how Christina just lived her faith and through that guided Grey back to God. The star of the book was 100% Boss. I loved his scenes and how he interacted with all the other characters.

“God hears your prayers, Grey. Our world is broken and filled evil. It's our job as Christians to stand up and fight back the darkness. One way is through prayer.”

So, I did identify the bad guy from the start - not sure if that was intentional so that the readers know something the characters don't - but it did not dimmer my enjoyment of this book. I loved the snippets from the bad guy's POV.

Kate Angelo is an author to watch and if you loved Lynette Eason's Elite Guardian series, you would love this first book in the Elite Guardian Collection.

“God isn't some sort of genie, Grey. You can't expect Him to grant your every wish. Prayer is just one of the ways we can have a relationship with God. Just talk to Him.”

About the book:

He’s the last client she wants to protect…

Elite Guardians bodyguard/former sniper CHRISTINA SHERMAN has protected uncooperative clients before—but this time, well her client is bossy, headstrong and occasionally eats off the floor. Yes, he’s a highly trained military working dog, but certainly her skills could be put to better use, right?

Not according to former Special Forces Air Commando GREY PARKER. He needs her help to protect his dog while he undergoes an experimental surgery that could restore his ability to walk. He just needs someone to keep his canine partner safe. Most of all, Grey wants back on his feet so he can track down a deranged scientist known as The Scavenger who unleashed a nerve agent that left Grey sidelined in a wheelchair.

When an attempt is made on Grey’s life, and dead bodies begin piling up—with evidence the same toxin is responsible—suddenly Christina is tasked with keeping both dog and soldier alive…and with them, the secrets that could stop a terrorist attack.

But this time, even Christina might be in over her head.

Dive into the exciting ignition to the Elite Guardians Collection.

What is better than a strong cowboy interacting with children? Two strong cowboys!

I flew through this audiobook because I could not stop listening to this story. It was captivating, not only because of the heroes, Mark, and Jonah, who, though they both are this strong solid man, they both had this softer side when interacting with the leading ladies and the children, not only because we are spoiled with two romances, but we again got to enjoy Karen Witemeyer's western mystery, filled with danger and action.

“God don't need fancy words," Jonah encouraged, "just true ones.”

Karen Witemeyer did a great job of pinning down the essence of the characters in these pages, especially Eliza, where I could just feel her southern personality coming through. The author also dealt very well with handling a sensitive topic (racism) in a gentle but honest way.

I really loving this series, not just the cowboys and the ladies, but also the horses with their own strong-willed personalities.

Please read this series in order, because all the books are worth to be read.

“But if each man and woman were defined solely by their greatest sin, what hope would there be for any of us?”

Oh, and I love that all the characters are names after Biblical characters.

About the book:

For years they've been nomads for justice, but a final mission may just lead their hearts home.

Members of the legendary Hanger's Horsemen, Mark Wallace and Jonah Brooks arrive in Llano County, Texas, to deliver a steed, never expecting they'd help deliver a baby as well. Left with an infant to care for, they head to a nearby foundling home, where Mark encounters the woman he nearly married a decade ago.

After failing at love, Katherine Palmer has dedicated her life to caring for children, teaming up with Eliza Southerland to start Harmony House. Eliza understands the pain of not fitting society's mold, being illegitimate and of mixed ancestry. Yet those are the very attributes that lead her to minister to outcast children. The taciturn Jonah intrigues her by defying all her stereotypes of men, but there are secrets behind his eyes—ghosts from wars past and others still being waged.

When the Horsemen hear rumors of missing children, they stay to investigate, sticking close to Harmony House and its beautiful owners. As they work together to uncover the truth, love and danger grow hand in hand until a final sinister scheme threatens to destroy them all.
