Review: Authentically Izzy

Authentically Izzy Authentically Izzy by Pepper D. Basham
My rating: 💛💛💛💛

This was such a fun story. I listened to the audiobook, and I adored Brodie’s accent.

The banter between the family members was also fun to view and the way the story was mostly told via emails and texts made it unique and interesting.

But apart from the fun and lighter moments, there was also depth in Izzy's journey to determine what her future really means, not just what others wanted.

I would recommend the audiobook for everyone who enjoys entertaining narrators and doesn’t mind laughing out loud a few times. Plus, if you are like me and can’t read with the Skymar accent, the audiobook delivers the accents very well.

About the book:

“Dear Izzy—I feel certain there’s a book-loving man living relatively nearby waiting to speak bookish to you ’til death do you part. You just haven’t met yet.”

Izzy Edgewood is a wannabe bookstore owner, quote queen, and Lord of the Rings nerd who has been waiting for Prince Charming to sweep her off her sneakered feet. But it’s hard to meet people when you spend more time with fictional humans than real ones. Which is why her pragmatist cousin Josephine decides to take Izzy’s future into her own meddling hands and create an online dating profile for the hopeful romantic.

To Izzy’s shock (and suspicion), Josie’s plan works. Soon, she’s dialoguing with a Hobbit-loving man named Brodie who lives in a small town an ocean away from her home in the Blue Ridge Mountains. But is their shared love of books, family, and correspondence enough to overcome Izzy’s fear of flying and the literal distance between them? And is a long-distance relationship even worth considering when a local author has been frequenting the library where she works and is proving to be a perfectly fine gentleman?

In this epistolary novel from award-winning author Pepper Basham, bookish dreams and happily-ever-afters collide to create a beautiful sort of magic that’s even better than fiction.

About the author:

Pepper D Basham has been telling tales ever since she was a little girl. When her grandmother called her a “writer” at the age of ten, Pepper took it as gospel and has enjoyed various types of writing styles ever since. A native of the Blue Ridge Mountains, mom of five, speech-language pathologist, and lover of chocolate, Pepper enjoys sprinkling her native Appalachian culture into her fiction wherever she can. She currently resides in the lovely mountains of Asheville, NC, where she works with kids who have special needs, searches for unique hats, and plots new ways to annoy her wonderful friends at her writing blog, The Writer’s Alley.

Review: Paint and Nectar

Paint and Nectar Paint and Nectar by Ashley Clark
My rating: 💛💛💛💛

I enjoyed this second book in the series a bit more than the first. The secrets characters were hiding which the reader could see before it was revealed added to the enjoyment of the story.

I also enjoyed the enemies to love plot - it is one of my favourites.

In both threads the message came across strongly to find your own way and stand strong for what you believe versus having family and other people determine the decisions you make.

Book Spotlight Friday! Positively, Penelope

Book Beginnings and Friday56

Book Beginnings is a weekly meme hosted by Rose City Reader that asks you to share the first sentence (or so) of the book you're reading. Friday 56 is hosted by Freda's Voice and asks you to grab a book (any book), turn to page 56 or 56% in your e-reader and share a non-spoiler sentence or two.  First Line Friday is a weekly meme hosted by Reading is my Superpower that asks you to share the first sentence of the book you're reading.

I enjoyed the first book in this series. Stories which is told mostly through letters, texts and email.

Positively, Penelope

About the book:

Told mostly through letters, texts, and email, this contemporary romance will charm its way into hearts as Penelope rescues a theater and discovers her true self in the process.

Penelope Edgewood is practically positive in every way, so when, fresh out of college, she is awarded a paid internship to help save a century-old theater on the island of Skymar, she jumps at the chance. After all, a crumbling theater needs the special touch of someone who reveres all things vintage and adores the stage.

Unfortunately, not everything is as it seems at Darling House Theatre. Finances are in shambles, the local theater group is disenchanted, and the two brothers, Matt and Alec Gray, can’t seem to see eye-to-eye about how to run their theatrical business. So, of course, it’s the perfect place for Penelope to shine her own personal brand of sunshine.

With a little help from GK, the person emailing her encouragement along the way, she puts all her heart into helping the Grays save Darling House. But between Matt’s ever-present skepticism, Alec’s tendency to treat Penelope a little too much like the “princess” she thinks she wants to be (until someone actually started treating her that way), a grandfather who is stuck in his grief, and a mysterious person stealing Penelope’s marketing ideas, she’s not sure her optimism is enough to make a happily-ever-after of her own story, let alone The Darling House’s.

Between an adorable little girl, a matchmaker, a sea monster or two, and a copious amount of musical references, can Penelope draw enough confidence from her faith, her family, and her adoration of all things Julie Andrews, to find the thief and save the theater . . . without getting her heart broken in the process?

Review: Break of Day

Break of Day Break of Day by Colleen Coble
My rating: 💛💛💛💛

This gripping series came to a hunting conclusion when good and evil meet in the woods.

I was a bit sorry that I was correct in who I suspected was involved, because of the effect it had on the people around the person.

Jon and Annie also reconciled in the challenges their relationship was facing. Annie had to work through forgiveness and acceptance as well personally to be able to move on.

I enjoyed the brief visit we had to Rock Harbor. Those who did not read that series won’t miss out, since Bree and Samson make very brief appearances. The focus is on Annie, but readers who have read and loved Rock Harbor will enjoy seeing their favourite characters doing well.

Review: Dark of Night

Dark of Night Dark of Night by Colleen Coble
My rating: 💛💛💛💛

Dark of Night continues after the cliffhanger we were left with in Edge of Dusk.

I found the bad guy in this book to be edge and creepy, but I tend to like the bad guys a little bit creepy and edgy.

The Mystery plot which was resolved in this book kept me engaged and guessing.

Annie and Jon’s story continues in book two with a few revelations upending their lives. Annie also needs to work through a surprising familial revelation.

The creepy plot which started in book one continues in book two. I have a suspect and wonder if I am on the right track.

About the book:

After clearing Jon’s name and stopping the attempts on her life, Annie Pederson would love some time to just process. Jon was her first love, and now—finally—he’s committed to returning to Rock Harbor and to her. But they’ve both changed in the intervening years. Is this the right thing? And how can she tell Kylie that Jon is her father when Kylie is so disdainful of him?

But with running the marina and her job as a park ranger, time is a luxury Annie never seems to have. All hands are on deck searching for a missing woman in the woods, and Annie stumbles upon a young hiker seemingly on the run from two hunters. This is the second time Annie has rescued someone who felt hunted. Is it more than a coincidence?

Then Jon learns that one of his former partners has been accused of malpractice, sending his plan to join a new orthopedic practice in the area awry. Jon and Annie’s second chance may be over before it even starts.

Review: Illusion

Illusion Illusion by Frank E. Peretti

About the book:

Dane and Mandy, a popular magic act for forty years, are tragically separated by a car wreck that claims Mandy's life -- or so everyone thinks. Even as Dane mourns and tries to rebuild his life without her, Mandy, supposedly dead, awakes in the present as the nineteen-year-old she was in 1970. Distraught and disoriented in what to her is the future, she is confined to a mental ward until she discovers a magical ability to pass invisibly through time and space to escape. Alone in a strange world, she uses her mysterious powers to eke out a living, performing magic on the streets and in a quaint coffee shop.

Hoping to discover an exciting new talent, Dane ventures into the coffee shop and is transfixed by the magic he sees, illusions that even he, a seasoned professional, cannot explain. But more than anything, he is emotionally devastated by this teenager who has never met him, doesn't know him, is certainly not in love with him, but is in every respect identical to the young beauty he first met and married some forty years earlier.

They begin a furtive relationship as mentor and protege, but even as Dane tries to sort out who she really is and she tries to understand why she is drawn to him, they are watched by secretive interests who not only possess the answers to Mandy's powers and misplacement in time but also the roguish ability to decide what will become of her.

Frank Peretti has crafted a rich, rewarding story of love and life, loss and restoration, full of twists and mystery. Exceptionally well written, Illusion will soon prove another Peretti classic.

About the author:

FROM HIS WEBSITE:

With more than 12 million novels in print, Frank Peretti is nothing short of a publishing phenomenon and has been called “America’s hottest Christian novelist.”

Peretti is a natural storyteller who, as a youngster in Seattle, regularly gathered the neighborhood children for animated storytelling sessions. After graduating from high school, he began playing banjo with a local bluegrass group. He and his wife were married in 1972, and Peretti soon moved from touring with a pop band to launching a modest Christian music ministry. Peretti later spent time studying English, screen writing and film at UCLA and then assisted his father in pastoring a small Assembly of God church. In 1983, he gave up his pastoring position and began taking construction jobs to make ends meet. While working at a local ski factory, he began writing This Present Darkness, the book that would catapult him into the public eye. After numerous rejections from publishers and a slow start in sales, word-of-mouth enthusiasm finally lifted This Present Darkness onto a tidal wave of interest in spiritual warfare. The book appeared on Bookstore Journal’s bestseller list every month for more than eight years. Peretti’s two spiritual warfare novels, This Present Darkness (1998) and Piercing the Darkness (1989), captivated readers, together selling more than 3.5 million copies. The Oath was awarded the 1996 Gold Medallion Award for best fiction.

For kids, Peretti wrote The Cooper Kids Adventure Series (Crossways and Tommy Nelson), which remains a best-selling series for children with sales exceeding 1 million copies. In August 2000, Peretti released the hilarious children’s audiocassette series titled Wild and Wacky Totally True Bible Stories, reprising his role as Mr. Henry, the offbeat substitute Sunday School teacher found in two Visual Bible for Kids videos.

Peretti released his first-ever non-fiction book, The Wounded Spirit in 2000, which quickly became a best-seller. The book addresses the pain of “wounded spirits” and was written as a result of painful childhood experiences.

Frank Peretti and his wife, Barbara Jean, live in the Western U.S. In spite of sudden fame and notoriety, Frank still lives a simple, well-rounded life that includes carpentry, banjo making, sculpturing, bicycling and hiking. He is also an avid pilot.

Review: Edge of Dusk

Edge of Dusk Edge of Dusk by Colleen Coble
My rating: 💛💛💛💛

Another great start to what I have come to expect from a Colleen Coble suspense series.

This series was a spin off from Rock Harbor, but almost had the same feel and vibe similar to the Pelican Harbor series. Also, a three book series where small mysteries were solved in the book, but n bigger mystery plot develops throughout the series which ultimately resolved in the final book.

I would suggest reading this series in order.

Annie and Jon had a past which provided readers with more backbone to their relationship. Some choices Annie made when she was young was a bit rushed and didn’t always make sense which impacted her adult life. I am not sure I would have been able to marry someone within a month of breaking up with the Love of my life.

I enjoyed catching up with characters from the Rock Harbor series.

About the book:

Annie Pederson has lived her life in the shadow of tragedy. Her sister was kidnapped off a dock one day while they were playing. Her father never forgave her for failing to stop it—even though she was only eight at the time. Her first love deserted her for an orthopedic residency. She quickly married his best friend and they were happy—until he and her parents were all killed in the same accident.

Now Annie is doing her best to keep all the different parts of her life afloat: her job as a park ranger, where she’s never stopped looking for evidence of her sister’s fate; the Tremolo Inn and Marina, which her parents owned her whole life and she can’t bear to see fail now that they’re gone; and her eight-year-old daughter, Kylie, who’s quickly losing memories of her father.

When Annie’s first love, Jon, returns to town, she tries her best to hide from him—she knows that story only ends in heartbreak—but avoiding him becomes impossible when she finds herself the victim of escalating incidents. Her home is broken into and her belongings riffled through. Her daughter’s things are destroyed. An arson attack consumes a beautiful pavilion her father built. A sniper’s bullet takes out a tire on her car. Why is she being targeted? And what secrets is some unknown enemy so desperate to keep hidden?

Review: The All-American

The All-American The All-American by Susie Finkbeiner
My rating: 💛💛💛💛

With a stunning cover which could not but drew my attention to pick up this story, I enjoyed my introduction to this author’s work. The POV from Flossie and Bertha was entertaining.

I did not expect the story to be from the POV of a teenager and almost teenager, but it made the story different, realistic, and emotional.

Flossie was a vibrant, innocent, and energetic character and loved the ending!

Through these two sisters, the readers will experience hope, fear, loss, and happy endings.

Review: The Record Keeper

The Record Keeper The Record Keeper by Charles Martin
My rating: 💛💛💛💛

This third book in the series had the same action-packed pace I enjoyed in book one.

Good vs evil was portrayed via two brothers with a similar heartbreak, one who found their way to doing good vs one falling into the snatches of evil.

Though this series handles the very difficult topic of human trafficking and the effects on those lucky enough to be rescued, the readers are also filled with hope at the end.

This is a series which should be read to get the complete picture.

About the book:

With gripping action and heart-wrenching emotion, Charles Martin continues to explore the true power of sacrificial love.

Murphy Shepherd's last rescue mission very nearly cost him his life. He'd like nothing more than to stay close to his wife and daughters for a while. But Bones's brother must be stopped, and there are so many who need to know that they are worth rescuing.

As the cat-and-mouse game moves into the open, Murphy is tested at every turn—both physically and mentally. And then the unthinkable happens: his beloved mentor and friend is taken. Without a trace.

Murphy lives by the mantra that love shows up. But how can he do that when he has no leads? With heart-stopping clarity, The Record Keeper explores the true cost of leaving the ninety-nine to find the one.

About the author:

Christy and I married in 1993. If you include dating, I’ve known and loved her for more than half my life. She is and always will be the home for my heart. We have three boys. Charlie, John T. and Rives. Folks often ask me, which of my books do I like the best. You might as well line up my sons and ask me who I love the most.

My hobbies are bow hunting, working out (a blend of old school stuff and martial arts, called Fight Fit) and Tae Kwon Do. In October 2012 I earned my black belt but I’m still the least flexible person you’ve ever met. The guy that trains me, laughs everytime I start warming up. My boys are far better at Tae Kwon Do than I but I doubt they have as much fun – I get to do and watch. They just do.

I also like to write, but that’s another story.
