Review: Riverbend Gap

Riverbend Gap Riverbend Gap by Denise Hunter
My rating: 💛💛💛

Riverbend Gap started on a tense note with Katelyn’s car almost going off the road with Conner coming to her rescue. Readers can see the chemistry between Kate and Conner, but then also the twist when we find out Kate is the girlfriend of Conner’s brother.

The contemporary story was interesting with different factors influencing the life and relationship of Kate and Conner – a rumour tainting a representation, a lost relationship with a biological relationship and Kate’s connection to Conner’s family and her longing to belong which affected some of her attention.

At the end everything worked out and this was an enjoyable start to new family series.

About the book:

She came in search of the family she’d always wanted—and found the kind of love she’d never dared to imagine.

When Katelyn Loveland’s car veered off a winding Appalachian Mountain road, she thought she was done for. That is until Cooper Robinson, local sheriff’s deputy, came to her rescue. And though Katie narrowly escaped her brush with death, she still fell. Hard.

She wasn’t the only one. But soon Cooper learns that the woman he’s more attracted to than any he’s ever met is his brother’s new girlfriend—and therefore unquestionably off limits. Yet, despite his best efforts, Cooper and Katie can’t seem to avoid running into each other. Or ignore the undeniable chemistry between them.

As they grow closer, Katie shares the secrets of her past and the real reason she moved to their small North Carolina town. She also wins over Cooper’s welcoming and bighearted family. But they don’t know that her feelings for Cooper keep growing—all while she’s dating his brother. Soon the stakes of their emotional connection become higher than either of them could have imagined. Katie stands to lose the first family she’s ever had, and a scandal could doom Cooper’s campaign for sheriff’s office. Suddenly they find themselves on the edge of another precipice—and they’re forced to make a decision that could change their lives forever.

In 1996, Denise began her first novel, writing while her children napped. Two years later it was published, and she's been writing ever since. Her books contain a strong romantic element, and her husband says he provides all her romantic material, but Denise insists a good imagination helps too!

Denise and her husband live in Indiana, where they raised three sons, and are currently enjoying an empty nest.

Review: Edgewater Road

Edgewater Road Edgewater Road by Shelley Shepard Gray
My rating: 💛💛💛

Rating 3.5

Edgewater Road was a strong, emotional read about second chances, new beginnings and putting one’s past behind.

I Loved Linc! He was solid and such a great mentor to those who entered the halfway home to start new. I enjoyed seeing how protective he was over Jen, and his internal struggle to keep her safe but also be a part of her life.

Jennifer had to face a few hard truths about her family and the past. There was also a horrible thing which happened to her – this could be a trigger for sensitive readers – but the author did a great job of showing all sides of this – facing it to overcome it.

Loved seeing a bit more about Seth who I met in his story in Unforgiven.

*I listened to the audiobook on Audible.*

About the book:

When Jennifer Smiley’s grandmother, Ginny, leaves her an old farmhouse on Edgewater Road in seemingly quiet Ross County, Ohio, Jennifer can’t pass up the opportunity for a new beginning. Almost immediately she meets a group of men who generously help her move in. When she realizes that they work for Lincoln Bennett, her next-door neighbor, she’s intrigued. Lincoln is gorgeous and has dark, lapis-blue eyes she could get lost in . . . but he doesn’t seem all that friendly. She’s torn between getting to know him and sticking with the solitude she knows so well. Maybe she could let down some of those walls she’s built around her emotions?

Lincoln Bennett likes to keep his head down and get his work done. He’s been to prison and he knows that a lot of folks don’t take kindly to a man with that kind of history. Plus, he’s busy helping other ex-cons get back on their feet. But when he meets Jennifer, he can’t help but feel an instant attraction. Will she be able to look past his unsavory history? Will she be able to accept the men he’s working so hard to help?

While Jennifer gets to know Lincoln and his friends, she also begins to unravel her grandmother’s story, putting together the pieces from scraps of memories and things she finds in her new home. She soon discovers that Ginny Smiley harbored some dark secrets on Edgewater Road—and that those secrets include both Lincoln and her own absent father. Is learning the truth worth the heartache it could bring?

As the weeks pass and she and Lincoln become closer, Jennifer learns there is a lot to uncover in Ross County—wonderful friendships, darling towns … and more than one secret that might be better left buried.

Can't Wait Wednesday! One Last Promise

Can't Wait Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Wishful Endings that spotlights and discusses the books we're excited about that we've yet to read. Generally, they're books that are yet to be released. It's based on Waiting on Wednesday, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine.

Loved the first two books in the series and looking forward to the third releasing August:

About the book: One Last Promise

She's sweet and pretty, but Moose knows his life has no room for anything more. Until the day Tillie shows up beaten and desperate and needing his help.

Tillie Young never thought her ex would track her to Alaska, but somehow he's found her. When he kidnaps her daughter, she'll do anything to get her back--even enlist help from her favorite grumpy customer. But Moose Mulligan is no match for a former MMA boxer and possible child trafficker, right?

Maybe, maybe not, but he's not going to let another child go missing on his watch. Worse, when Moose finds himself accused as the kidnapper, there's no backing down. He must find the girl, keep Tillie safe, and outwit a man fueled by revenge. It will take all of Moose's Alaskan savvy to keep them alive--but who is going to protect him from the love he never saw coming?

Review: Firestorm

Firestorm Firestorm by Lisa Phillips
My rating: 💛💛💛💛

Firestorm was a rush with hotshots and smokejumpers working together with a fire camp to ensure the safety of everyone involved.

The story moved fast and there was a lot of characters to connect with and catch up with.
Between fighting fire, there was also a suspense element which started in the beginning of the series and in this series more things were revealed.

The main characters were also a bit older with grown children, had a messy history but still a spark between them. The author tackled a difficult topic in a way that made this reader feel the struggle of everyone. I did feel there was some things which was just too easily accepted and sorted out – but this was a fast-moving shorter story, so with the limited time it made sense.

Now, I am on to Fireline because I want to know what is going on with Booth!

Then the wildfire turns its force onto the camp and suddenly the hotshots show up to help her fight it. Only problem…the last person she expects is for her former flame, Charlie Benning—the man she can’t forget—to show up working alongside her son. Rather, his son. Who he doesn’t know exists. And Jayne isn’t about to let go of the man she loves a second time. But if the blazing wildfire isn't enough, a dangerous and relentless killer is on the prowl in the woods…Now, with the camp cut off from the outside world and the fire closing in, it’s a race against time as Charlie, Jayne, Orion, and a team of courageous smokejumpers join forces to protect the campers against a merciless inferno and a murderer. But the biggest threat of all might be Charlie’s devastating secret that could destroy the happy ending they’ve waited for so long.

Review: Into the Starlight

Into the Starlight Into the Starlight by Amanda Cabot
My rating: 💛💛💛

Rating 3.5

Into the Starlight was about dreams and aligning your dreams with the will of God, using your talents for the good of others.

Burke and Joanna had a sweet friendship which grew into love. I loved how they listened to each other, supported one another and was each other’s confidant.

I loved catching up with all the sisters – I still need to read Louisa’s story, though I did not feel like I were lost at all, so I do think each book can be read as a standalone.

There were a few possible characters who could have been involved in the disappearance of Clive, though I did see early on who the true culprit was.

A satisfying conclusion to the series and the mystery around what truly happened to Clive.

About the book:

After more than a year in Europe, Joanna Vaughn returns to Sweetwater Crossing, her dreams of becoming a concert pianist shattered. As if that weren't enough, her husband, whom she married after a whirlwind courtship, has died. The only thing sustaining her on the journey back to Texas was the thought of her childhood home. But to Joanna's dismay, she's changed so much that the place she once loved no longer feels like home.

After his fiancée married his partner and both blamed him for a patient's death, Dr. Burke Finley believes it's time for a change. A quick trip with his almost-aunt Della Samuels to Sweetwater Crossing turns into an extended stay to discover what happened to his uncle and her would-be husband. But the beautiful and musical Joanna makes it more than bearable.

As the two join forces to help Della, there is no denying the attraction felt on both sides. But ghosts from the past are coming to call--and threatening to destroy any chance at happily-ever-after.

Get swept away by this emotional tale of family, friendship, and the kind of love that overcomes every obstacle.

About the Author:

With both parents avid readers, it's no surprise that Amanda Cabot learned to read at an early age. From there it was only a small step to deciding to become a writer. Of course, deciding and becoming are two different things, as she soon discovered. Fortunately for the world, her first attempts at fiction were not published, but she did meet her goal of selling a novel by her thirtieth birthday. Since then she’s sold more than forty novels. When she’s not writing, Amanda enjoys sewing, cooking and – of course – reading.

Review: Queen of Hearts

Queen of Hearts Queen of Hearts by Heather Day Gilbert
My rating: 💛💛💛

Rating 3.5

This psychological thriller was intriguing from the first page, starting out with a letter from a very loyal fan, or perhaps stalker, which set the tone that the main character’s life might be in danger, and raised questions of who this stalker could be.

The plot evolved on a fast pace, with multiple possibilities for who the stalker might be, real or fictional with a suspenseful ending.

The author has written books in multiple genres and this new book in the psychological thriller genre show casted the author’s gift in the writing industry.

Review: Whispers from the Shadows

Whispers from the Shadows Whispers from the Shadows by Roseanna M. White
My rating: 💛💛💛💛

I enjoyed this historical mystery and suspense, involving spies and a time sensitive between the Americans and British.

I love Thad and little Jack and it was great to see Thad’s parents were the main characters from Ring of Secrets. Thad was a great dashing hero. Gwyneth’s was a strong heroine who found her inner strength more and more as the story unfolded.

The plot was intriguing and filled with mystery.

I listed to the audiobook which was very entertaining and pinned the characters’ voices very well.

About the book:

Treachery causes Gwyneth Fairchild's world to crumble. The daughter of a British general, she barely saves her life by fleeing London aboard a ship to America. Her goal is to find refuge with the Lane family in Maryland, having been told by her father she could trust Winter and Bennet Lane implicitly, even though their nations are once again at war. After meeting their son Thad, she wonders how safe she truly is when she discovers that the Lanes trade in a dangerous commodity—espionage.
Not long after Gwyneth finds refuge in his city, Thad Lane experiences the tug of love, though he fears it may blur the lines of loyalty. With family playing the part of enemies and enemies proving themselves friends, a future with Gwyn is uncertain. But at this moment, with the British advancing on Washington and Baltimore, they have only their shared faith in God as a shield.
