Review: The Edge of Belonging

The Edge of Belonging The Edge of Belonging by Amanda Cox
My rating: 💛💛💛💛

This was a powerful, strong debut filled with emotions as we follow the lives of characters struggling with loss, infertility and the effects of abandonment.

Both timelines were strong and had their own heroes who made the timeline - present time it was Reese and, in the past, (1994) it was Harvey and Pearl who stole the story and my heart. I loved seeing how Harvey and Pearl connected and how the connection even ran deeper.

I listened to audiobook and the narrator did a brilliant job.

*I listened to the audiobook on Everand.*

About the book:

When Ivy Rose returns to her hometown to oversee an estate sale, she soon discovers that her grandmother left behind more than trinkets and photo frames--she provided a path to the truth behind Ivy's adoption. Shocked, Ivy seeks clues to her past, but a key piece to the mystery is missing.

Twenty-four years earlier, Harvey James finds an abandoned newborn who gives him a sense of human connection for the first time in his life. His desire to care for the baby runs up against the stark fact that he is homeless. When he becomes entwined with two people seeking to help him find his way, Harvey knows he must keep the baby a secret or risk losing the only person he's ever loved.

In this dual-time story from debut novelist Amanda Cox, the truth--both the search for it and the desire to keep it from others--takes center stage as Ivy and Harvey grapple with love, loss, and letting go.

About the author:

Amanda Cox is a blogger and a curriculum developer for a national nonprofit youth leadership organization,

but her first love is communicating through story. She holds a bachelor's degree in Bible and theology and a master's degree in professional counseling. Her studies and her interactions with hurting families over a decade have allowed her to create multidimensional characters that connect emotionally with readers.

Review: Every Dog Has His Day

Every Dog Has His Day Every Dog Has His Day by Janice Thompson
My rating: 💛💛💛

This was another enjoyable cozy mystery with intriguing characters, friends and colleagues who tease each other but stand together when it matters and cute fury friends.

I enjoyed all the references to be a true Texan and how everyone embraced and welcomed the newbie in town, teaching him the ins and outs of what it means to be a Texan.

It was fun to catch up on all the characters from the previous books in the series and to see how their relationships are developing.

Review: Fireproof

Fireproof Fireproof by Susan May Warren
My rating: 💛💛💛💛💛

I was excited to read Crispin’s story when readers were first introduced to him. Add that excitement and spies – think Jason Bourne, Jack Reacher etc, a romantic connection and the added danger of a forest fire, it was hard to put this book down.

Jade, with her mask of strength, but hidden beneath some insecurities and past hurts, was a perfect sidekick in this wild ride.

This final book in the series was a rush, but also connected everything in the series together. We also get to see some characters we’ve met in previous books and gotten to love.

Review: The Berlin Letters

The Berlin Letters The Berlin Letters by Katherine Reay
My rating: 💛💛💛💛

The Berlin Letters were a beautifully written story involving secrets, mysteries and spies.

The author did a great job of connecting past and present. I loved how each POV was in the main characters timeline and how everything fell into place and connected.

The story grabbed my interest with all the intrigue, and the narrator did a brilliant job of keeping me engaged and connecting me to the main characters.

I do not know much about the Berlin Wall, but the author took me back in time right in the middle of all the fear and unknowns.

*I listened to the audiobook on Everand.*

About the book:

Near the end of the Cold War, a CIA code breaker discovers a symbol she recognizes from her childhood, which launches her across the world to the heart of Berlin just before the wall comes tumbling down. November 1989 —After finding a secret cache of letters with intelligence buried in the text, CIA cryptographer Luisa Voekler learns that not only is her father alive but he is languishing in an East German Stasi jail. After piecing together the letters with a series of articles her grandfather saved, Luisa seeks out journalists Bran Bishop and Daniel Rudd. They send her to the CIA, to Andrew Cademan—her boss. Luisa confronts Cademan and learns that nothing is a coincidence, but he will not help her free her father. So she takes matters into her own hands, empties her bank account, and flies to West Berlin. As the adrenaline wears off and she recognizes she has no idea how to proceed, Luisa is both relieved and surprised when a friend shows up with contacts and a rudimentary plan to sneak her across the wall. Alternating storylines between Luisa and her father, The Berlin Letters shows the tumultuous early days of the wall, bringing Berlin, the epicenter of the Cold War, to life while also sharing one family’s journey through secrets, lies, and division to love, freedom, and reconciliation.

Review: Before We Were Us

Before We Were Us Before We Were Us by Denise Hunter
My rating: 💛💛💛💛💛

This was a beautiful story about sacrificial love, trust, patience and above all faith.

I loved how the author took the reader from present to past to fill us in on the lost memories of Lauren. I loved seeing how Lauren and Jonah’s relationship grew and felt the loss with Jonah when Lauren forgot her memories but did not even want to remember.

Jonah was a strong hero, but had his uncertainties due to his past, but was also not afraid to be vulnerable. The love he had for Lauren was very strong and my heart broke with him throughout this experience.

Yes, there is a happy ending, and a very good one, but you need to go get the book and read it.
This is one of my favourite books I have read by this author.

About the book:

She can't remember. He can't forget.

Seven months ago, after graduating with a hospitality degree, city girl Lauren Wentworth travelled to rural New Hampshire to become temporary manager of Pinehaven Lodges, a rustic family-owned resort. What started as just a springboard to her dream job became so much more when she fell in love with the owner's son Jonah, the Landry family, and her simple but rewarding position at the resort. Now she's reaching toward a different kind of future than she'd imagined for herself--and happier than she's ever been. But then she falls from a ladder.

When Lauren wakes up in the hospital, she only recalls her first couple months at the resort. She remembers her adversarial relationship with Jonah and her major crush on small-town doctor, Carson, who also has big-city ambitions--but is, unfortunately, taken. However, according to everyone around her, she's now madly love with Jonah and has forfeited the dream job awaiting her in Boston. It seems impossible to believe she could've made such drastic changes in a matter of months!

Jonah is heartbroken at her memory loss and determined to help Lauren remember the deep feelings they've developed for one another. But Lauren isn't sure she wants to remember falling in love with someone she doesn't even like or giving up her dream career for a rustic resort in Podunk, New Hampshire.

Especially when Dr. Carson is now available. . .

Review: Here With Me

Here With Me Here With Me by Mandy Boerma
My rating: 💛💛💛💛

Here With Me was a wonderful story about trusting God with every aspect of your life, allowing people close to you, second chances, and above all, communication.

It was clear from the start of the story that Sadie’s and David’s love for each other ran deep, but miscommunication and misunderstandings kept them apart. I enjoy seeing them reconnecting and appreciated David’s desire to walk in God’s will, but also to realise sometimes when one season is done, God opens other opportunities as well.

I loved how all the side characters, as well as Sadie’s parents, were there around David and Sadie, to support them and give them wisdom, but giving them space to find their own way.

Looking forward to going back to reading the original series, and to continue with this collection.

She just wants a fresh start…

Inheriting her best friend’s daughter and a store on the brink of collapse, Sadie Hoover is determined to provide Lottie a stable life and keep the family business afloat. But her resolve is tested when the past walks in, wearing a tool belt and a smile that still weakens her knees.

Is he back to break her heart?

David Williams, once the love of Sadie’s life, returns to Heritage not as the missionary he was, but as a man in search of healing and purpose. Tasked with community service, he’s thrown into the daily grind of nuts and bolts, unaware that the hardware store’s troubles—and Sadie’s struggles—are more than just loose hinges and unpaid bills.

What will it cost her to fall for him again?

If the store fails, they lose not just a legacy, but the second chance life has offered them. Can they rekindle their love while saving the heart of Heritage, or will their dreams rust away like forgotten tools?
