Book Spotlight Friday! Ambush

Book Beginnings and Friday56

Book Beginnings is a weekly meme hosted by Rose City Reader that asks you to share the first sentence (or so) of the book you're reading. Friday 56 is hosted by My Head is Full of Books and asks you to grab a book (any book), turn to page 56 or 56% in your e-reader and share a non-spoiler sentence or two.  First Line Friday is a weekly meme hosted by Reading is my Superpower that asks you to share the first sentence of the book you're reading.

Another great suspense from the author who introduced me to Christian Romantic Suspense.

Ambush

About the book:

"Ambush is electric--the perfect blend of romance, suspense, and characters you swear are real. With a deadly mystery, past trauma, and future hope, Ambush is just one more proof of Coble at the top of her game." --Tosca Lee, New York Times bestselling author

The first book in the riveting Sanctuary Series from USA TODAY bestselling author Colleen Coble, where a young woman will do anything to uncover the truth of her parents' murder--even work alongside the man who once broke her heart. Perfect for fans of Allison Brennan and Dani Pettrey.

Paradise Alden's childhood in Nova Cambridge, Alabama, was idyllic until the night her parents were murdered. Since then, life has left her scarred. The abuse she suffered in the foster care system, her first love's betrayal, and the jaguar attack that nearly destroyed her career have led to an unshakable distrust--in men, in God, and maybe in even in herself.

After fifteen years, returning to her hometown is a last resort to finding her life again. She's hoping the wildlife refuge where she's accepted a veterinarian job will be the perfect place to heal from her recent traumas and unlock her memories about the night her parents died. But the day she arrives at The Sanctuary, a body is discovered on the grounds. And soon, a series of deadly events threatens not only her future, but the man who, despite all odds, still makes her pulse stutter. Arson, a shooting, a break-in, and multiple instances of animals being freed from their enclosures all point back to him, but Paradise knows Blake Lawson isn't responsible. Not the man who has been helping his mother manage The Sanctuary these past six months and care for his stepbrothers in the wake of their father's death . . . even if his betrayal years ago cost her everything.

Someone dangerous is lurking beneath the town's moss-draped trees, and Paradise refuses to let another murderer disappear into the shadows.

Colleen Coble's Ambush is just what her readers want--edge-of-your-seat suspense perfectly balanced with closed-door romance. The intricacies of a wild-animal sanctuary, sabotage, secrets that someone is willing to kill to keep hidden, and the resurrection of first love make this a compelling story you won't want to miss.

Also in The Sanctuary Prowl (book #2, available November 2025) and Descent (book #3; available July 2026).

Available now from Fragile Designs, and from Colleen Coble and Rick What We Hide and I Think I Was Murdered.

All include discussion questions that are perfect for book clubs.

What had possessed her to agree to this crazy idea?

Friday 56

They'd always been full of mystery and secrets, but today they were clear.

My thoughts so far

I was totally kept captivating in this story with not knowing exactly what will happen next.

Review: A Vast and Gracious Tide

A Vast and Gracious Tide A Vast and Gracious Tide by Lisa Carter
My rating: 💛💛💛

Rating 3.5

This was an enjoyable romantic suspense where the suspense will keep you engaged and guessing till the end.

I really enjoyed the mystery and suspense part of the story.

Caden felt very realistic with his struggles to settle back home after the war.

The romance part did irritate me a bit with McKenna making wrong choices when their was clearly dinting between her and Caden.

All in all a good romantic suspense.

About the book:

A murder on the tranquil beaches of the Outer Banks puts two strangers on a path to uncover the truth

Caden Wallis has suffered several devastating blows that have left him reeling. He’s lost friends and now his girlfriend to the ravages of war. He arrives on the Outer Banks for one final mission—to thank the woman who sent him a quilt while he was recuperating from his wounds at Walter Reed Army Hospital.

McKenna Dockery knows all about loss. She lost her mother at a young age, and her father has never been the same since he came home from his own war. She juggles the family business, her ailing father, and an aging grandmother. Much to Caden’s surprise, she is the quilter—not some elderly lady. The quilt was something she’d begun for her future husband but shipped to the military hospital after the tragic death of her fiancé.

When a man is found snared in a net and murdered on McKenna’s property, she and Caden must work together to bring the killer to justice. Each must learn to trust the other, or no one will be safe in the tangled web of conspiracy, greed, and deceit lurking in the tidal marshlands of the Outer Banks. A nor’easter, a sea turtle named Cecil, and a surf-crazy hound named Ginger conspire to bring these two searching hearts together through the vast and gracious tide of God’s love.

Book Spotlight Friday! Rescued Duty

I love this small town setting filled with heroes.

Rescued Duty

About the book:

After growing up in foster care, investigative reporter Naya Michél has learned there’s usually more to a situation than meets the eye. When she’s assigned a story about the current water contamination crisis in town, Naya is ready to show her boss she has what it takes to secure a promotion—especially since the events surrounding the story have personal ties to her childhood. When her investigation makes her the target of someone who wants the truth kept quiet, how far will Naya’s determination take her before the cost becomes too much?

Rescue Squad firefighter and former foster kid Zack Stephens is ready to step up his game at work when his boss hands him a cold case for hazmat training. As Zack delves into the case, he uncovers a shocking revelation—his parents’ deaths weren’t accidental. Determined to find their murderer, Zack throws himself into the investigation. But he doesn’t expect his search to collide with Naya, the girl he promised to protect when they lived in foster care together.

As threats mount and Naya is caught in the crosshairs, can Zack reconcile the mistakes of his past and find a killer before someone deals a lethal blow? And can the two of them learn to trust—and love—each other again despite the pain of their past?

Rescued Duty is a pulse-pounding tale of second chances, found family, and the unbreakable bonds forged in the face of adversity.

About the book:

There's Trouble Up North...

Meet Conrad, a hockey star meets celebrity romance in the Minnesota Kingston series by USA Today bestselling author Susan May Warren.

He’s an unlikely bodyguard, but someone has to keep this woman alive…

Meet Penelope billionaire heiress, mystery podcaster, and magnet for trouble. If only she wasn’t so determined to unravel the mystery of “who killed her sister’s fiancé.” Because clearly, given her recent kidnapping, with each episode, she’s closer to the truth.

And someone wants to silence her.

Probably she needs a protector, right?

Enter Conrad Kingston, power Center for the Minnesota Blue Ox hockey team and a Guy with a Secret. Namely, the panic attacks that haunt him every time he steps into the limelight. Hanging out with Celebrity Penny is exactly NOT what he needs…

Except, Blue Ox need ticket sales and when a mix-up ropes him into playing Penelope's fake boyfriend, he’s suddenly the social media darling, driving in fans to the home ice. Only problem…one of them doesn’t know the dating is fake.

As Penelope's stalker draws nearer with every juicy episode, Conrad finds himself sliding from fake kisses to real protective instincts, and on thin ice with his heart. But can he find his footing before the killer catches up to Penelope?

Review: The Perfect Rom-Com

The Perfect Rom-Com The Perfect Rom-Com by Melissa Ferguson
My rating: 💛💛💛

Rating 3.5

This was my first book by this author and I enjoyed it.

If you are looking for a light story where you can just relax and escape real life, this is a book you should try. The title, for me, had more to do with Bryony’s writing career than the plot of this story.

The writing was smooth and flowed easy and fast. I didn’t even realise how fast I was flying through the story. It is an easy, not so serious story, and perfect after my heavier gothic read.
Bryony and Jack were fun to get to know and I enjoyed watching their friendship.

Some of Bryony’s language students created some funny moments.

The ending was a bit more drama than real life, but it fit the story (good overcoming evil) and I enjoyed the fun, easy read.

About the book:

She's written dozens of smash hit novels as a ghostwriter. Too bad no one knows it.

Aspiring author Bryony Page attends her first writers conference bursting with optimism and ready to sell her manuscript with long-shot dreams of raising awareness for The Bridge, her grandmother's financially-struggling organization where she teaches ESL full-time. But after a disastrous pitching session, she stumbles into correcting another author's work in a last-ditch attempt to make a good impression with the agent. And she, as it turns out, is spot on.

No one is more surprised than Bryony when the agent offers her the opportunity to be a ghostwriter for Amelia Benedict, popular rom-com novelist. Bryony agrees on one she'll write books for this vain, demanding woman just as long as Jack Sterling, literary agent of the legendary Foundry Literary Agency, works to sell her own book too.

What nobody predicted, however, was that Bryony's books would turn Amelia Benedict into the Amelia Benedict, household name and bestselling author with millions of copies sold around the world.

And just like that, the Foundry Agency can't let her go.

But on a personal note, Jack is realizing he can't either.
